PCS to Hawaii in July all I know is 3rd brigade. Anyone have some comments on what to expect as an infantryman?

As an infantryman, that you can swim, the thing is an island and well there were no snakes thanks to the introduced Mongoose to get rid of them. Everything is force projection there and much like Europe, the family will be there, you won't be if it stays the way it is. Truly, every location is what you make of it and if the Infantry is anything like Aviation, the branch is the same mainly with sprinkles of divisional differences. Enjoy the island, it is expensive to leave once everyone gets homesick!

You will love hawaii , for about 3 months and then you start getting island fever and everything is do damn expensive. You will hate the long runs up kole kole pass as it feels like your climbing to heaven and as a grunt get use to your uniforms and boots being red as the red dirt just stains them there. Stay away from waihiawa as it seems that every new grunt wants to go there and get wasted and you don't wanna end up like the grunts that got rolled back in 06,07 and 08 that got rolled by a couple mahu's and woke up with a blackeye , messed up face ,sore and bleeding asshole and an empty wallet. Things you'll love though is the food is great, nothing like zippys chili after a long night of partying and get use to spam and white sticky rice as it's on every meal from breakfast to dinner, the shrimp trucks are just awesome and the temperature is great year round so buy a few nice pairs of flip flops and lots of shorts and leave the Jean's at home. You'll hate the Hawaiian snow in the winter time(that's rain if you don't know) but the temp stays great.

Two and a half years there, I recorded about 76 days completely by myself to do anything I wanted.

Expect lots of time training in the field. The training area are really steep and hilly. There is a high demand for land and ranges to train on, we train often and on the weekends. Show up ready to take a apft and if you're an nco/officer height and weight.

We're going to JRTC(Polk) as opfor in the fall FYI you'll be in the dead middle of the island at Schofield Barracks. North shore is where the beaches are at and Honolulu is a hot mess.
I feel like you're coming to 2-27 since so many of us are leaving. I hope you like hiking. Oh yeah and if you're looking for a vehicle, look no further than one of these jerks PCSing out of here.
There's a great market for used goods of all kinds here so make sure you check out Craigslist and the fb marketplace, but that's because everything here is stupidly expensive. Col Ryan runs a tight ship and there's no shortage of opportunities around here, just make sure you seek them out as the culture can get a little toxic in some places.

Mohalo!

I haven't been there since 05, so I can't say what it's like now that they have the Stryker's and RSTA, but be prepared for a lot of monsoon level field problems, PTA on the big island, and the lovely red dirt of the Kahuku's. Field problems will build character for sure. Worth the pain though.

I'm just kind of curious because I'm in a combined arms battalion right now with 3rd brigade in ft hood... making a transition to an actual infantry unit gonna be a lot different from what we have here in hood I'm sure.
