I ran my first 5K over the weekend. I think I'm hooked now...

I recommend running with local groups or track clubs or friends. Once the track clubs train you up you'll love running all the more!

This exactly what I did in preparing for the Indy 500 Mini-Marathon. My group had experienced runners that mentored me along the way, plus they provded a guide that details diet, running schedule, injury prevention etc..... I just spent a lot of time hitting the pavement, treadmills didn't work for me.

I agree with the training schedule comments. I was always athletic growing up, but I only "ran" when I had to, sprints and such. Runners really do know the secrets to running longer distances, setting pace, diets, breathing etc. and they impart their expertise regularly. Groups motivate for running the longer distances also. I prefer trails because the ground is a little softer, little easier on the joints, knees, and back. But I hear ya about the treadmill - not a fan in the least. I'll run on it if I have to. I prefer outside and even in the rain before the treadmill. On a side note, the running community travels to run in various races and they meet people from all over. I have not actually travelled with the running group, but at some point I'm sure it would be a great time!

Two 5k's started it all for me in the fall last year. I'm up the one full marathon, seven half's and the Army 10 miler this year. I just ran two of the seven this weekend back2back. I will admit, I'm becoming an event junkie. Good luck with all your runs!
