I was a Sergeant (E5) in the Guard, no longer serving. Would it be possible to reenlist in the Reserves and receive a rank of E6?

I don't think you could just come in as a 6 without having a packet submitted before a board. Do you have all the NCOES schools etc , time in grade and all to be eligible to submit a packet. Does the unit have an open 6 slot in your MOS??????

I am guessing if the recruiter said he could get me in an E6 slot that he had one open but not sure

You can be in a E6 slot as an E-5 but you will still have to submit a packet if you have all your schooling for the promotion. If all your paper work is good to go and the unit wants you in that slot you should be able to get promoted.

Depending on how long you have been out may determine whether you would likely even hold on to E-5.

I had to drop a pay grade when I came back in but that was after being out from 1974 until 1990, a 16+ year hiatus!!! At least I didn't have to go through Basic or A.I.T. again!

SGT Calvin Arend - Getting a slot and getting the rank are two different issues. Do you hold the MOS for the slot he can get you in is the first issue? If not you will need to reclass. Then if you don't have all the NCOES required for E6 then you will have to get them completed also.

Of course it all depends on the needs of the unit and the MOS being filled.
