They have an online market there on the nipr sites where you can buy/sell with other people stationed there. Generally you can get a modem dirt cheap from someone leaving.

Sir,
I recently redeployed from Camp Lemonnier a few months ago. I do believe once you purchase your internet you can use an Ethernet cable, you can ask that question to personnel who work in that office. See pic below it has the contact information.
I've included the of wireless modem I used while there. They are hard to come by because every one one wants/needs them. However, the service members leave they advertise on the local swap shop to sell them. My personal opinion, I would go with my own and if he Ethernet cable works. Sell the modem on the swap shop..
Hope this helps

I was told that the internet in Djibouti CLUs was DSL. Do they give you a modem, or do you need to buy a combination modem/router?

Actually, From what I remember I plugged the cat-5 cable into my laptop. Thereafter, I used or purchased an Apple airport express to have my own wifi. SPC Osborne was there at the same time I was if my mind serves me right.

So a modem is NOT needed for internet access; you just need to buy a router if you want wifi?

A router was on the recommended list of things to bring, but I wasn't sure if the cost of the monthly internet service included a modem or if I was supposed to get a combination modem/router.

Paying for internet in the CLU does not include a router. If you have one to bring it'll work. As others have said, on the intranet there is a board where people post things to buy/sell. You should contact who you are relieving as they may have things they can sell to you... that's the norm of IA members... to pass on their goodies rather than to ship them home... often it's passed on for a price.

I understood that I'd have to buy a router if I wanted wifi; what I wasn't sure of if I also needed a modem between the internet connection and the computer.

Yea bring your own Wi-Fi spot cause they don't last long on the swap shop. Since you'll have your own CLU you just need to mid grade package. If you want to watch tv I suggest bringing your own coax cable and European pal type f connector.

Its expensive, like $100 a month if you want good connections, wifi devices are usable, just bring a decent router
