I would love to hear how your transition was to the civilian world. Was there something else that supplemented the TAP program?

PO3 Daniel Stone it was a scary at first, but with all the resources from the TAP program, it set me up for success in job interviewing and networking.

I'm so old, the only TAP I was aware of was the spigot you put on a keg, but as someone who transitioned successfully and was responsible for hiring as a civilian, I can give some advice. Make your application and CV compatible with the job you desire. A lot of people had heard of Cobra pilots, but my task was to make them see how the requirements of that position applied to what they needed. As a matter of fact, I ended up becoming an operations manager in a large medical supply distribution company because I was able to apply the leadership and organizational traits used in the military to what the company needed.

When I retired in 1996 I went to the briefing and was basically told that if I didn't get out and in to the civilian job market before I turned 40 I was screwed and would never find a good job. Which was part (mainly it was family) of the decision making process to retire. I found that in the area that I relocated to (Southern Minnesota) my age (39) was way more in demand than people 15+ years younger than I was. I have been happily employed since the day I retired and looking forward to retirement again in a few more years.

Yes, the 1990s were good to the capable veteran eagerly seeking employment. A good economy makes all the difference. I'm hoping for our struggling veteran that have recently gotten out will have a taste of a good economy sooner rather than later. More mature workers bring those soft skills to the work place such as being punctual, being a quick study, follow through, and doing the job right from the start, for example. Age is just a number, we are all young as long as we are constantly planning for the future. All the best!
