If you read Once an Eagle, you know the hero was up and down in permanent and temporary ranks based on the needs of the military...but you might not know that one of my personal heroes, Gen. Andrew Goodpaster (SACEUR) took a downgrade to 3- star rank to command his beloved West Point. If we had full mobilization or even partial mobilization, what about you?

If I received a letter ordering me back I would go, I'm actual I think in better shape now than when I was in before. My waist size is smaller and I workout with weights now. I can do just as many push ups as I did when I was in my late teens early 20's and I'm 52 now.

I would go. Don't know how useful I'd be in my old AFSC after so long, but I'd go.

I would be more than willing to do what is necessary to serve and protect my Country. My oath of enlistment never ended.

SGM I would have no issue returning to service up to two grades lower. I loved my time in service and would do it all again.

Are you talking about the dumbass on Pennsylvania Ave, Observatory Circle, or one of the 535 dumbasses that work at the Capitol Building? If you choose any of these, then the answer would be, "Yes". Right now, the problem is a combination of every single one of these people and they are currently operating outside of the Constitution and any orders that come from any of these people/entities is an illegal order.

Common now, talk like is why, these same intelligent challenge people, try to curb Veteran right to own fire arms. Some of them actual think we are well verse in some of Founding Fathers literature, and take it to heart, and that we do understand the laws and meanings of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, even if they can't make them all out for themselves, unless they throwing out the Constitution out in vain, while addressing what the others are doing is illegal. Which according to the same document they mention that what such party is doing is illegal, clearly explains, yes, that party has a right to do exactly what they did. All because two groups of jackasses can't come together and make laws, or pass legislation to perform the basic task of checks and balances that are written into the constitution to begin with.

I have seen words like Revolution and Revolutionary used to many place in the last month or so. Yes, you might believe his orders are illegal, but at this current point of time, the Joints Chiefs of Staff still believe they are legal. So if they send you orders. Well orders, are orders, or you can spend some time in Canada. I hear it getting quite cold this time of year.

P02 Ferretti...missed your Q earlier. The highest rank in regular peacetime forces is Two Star. Three and Four star (and Five Star) ranks are not "promotions" per se; they are "advancements" to a form of temporary rank "appointment" by the President, confirmed by Congress much like a political appointee (ponder that one). One has to request retirement at the "highest rank satisfactorily held", also confirmed by Congress, which in Gen Goodpaster's case, was granted. Perhaps that is why people who want to be a 3 or 4 star have to dance around the sombrero and not piss off any Senators. While serving on active duty as a three star, however, Goodpaster he was paid at that Grade. "Grade" or pay is not necessarily always the same as one's "rank" which can be a bit complicated as in my case ("actual rank is Captain, grade is E9..save that discussion for a rainy day). If necessary, a Grade Determination Board makes a decision on final pay. Complicating all that is the law under which someone retires (20 Year or 30 Year) and other factors such as the law under which enlisted or appointed/commissioned. For example, under the 20 Year Law, one needs 10 years of active commissioned service to retire at that GRADE (can be waived to 8). However, under the 30 Year Law it's only six months of "satisfactory" service "as determined by the service secretary". People don't seem to realize that unless an officer resigns or otherwise vacates a commission, they are still commissioned and retain the "rank" in various statuses. So a fellow might be RIFed but is still an officer in the Reserve if that is the source of commission.

As Lee Greenwood sings, "I'd gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today." I would accept a downgrade to Major if the Air Force needed old guys like me. My Lt Col rank was "permanent" because I served after DOPMA was implemented.

I think about getting back in ALL.THE.TIME. but I don't know that I could do it taking a hit on my rank. I made E-4 in the Army at 19 and then had to lose a stripe to join the Navy. I was an E-4 for almost the entire 6 years I was in the Navy (thanks to rate mergers and RIDICULOUS cut scores). With my current amount of life experience and education, it'd be hard for me to come back without a commission.

With all of that said, IF my country was truly in a desperate state and NEEDED me, I don't know how I could really turn down her call.
