I just reenlisted for 6 years in the guard and got a $20k “tax-free” bonus but I want to switch to active duty. Will they make me pay back the bonus?

More than likely yes, because that money was from a different fund than from Active Duty, take a look at your re-enlistment contract and see what stipulations there are.

Another option if you want to get some AD time is to jump on another units deployment, get on Tour of Duty / Carerra, etc if you want to keep that bonus.

SGT Justin Brothen - Reenlisted at my 365 while I was in Iraq. Got home around August 2023. Spent some time at home, then my new contract started January 2024. Got paid my bonus in February 2024. I'm supposed to get the taxes back from that bonus in 3-6 months.

If I just reenlisted in the national guard, will I have to pay back my bonus if I want to switch to active duty?

You already made one mistake and now you want to make another even worst?

Most definitely Yes! Even if you were in the Reserves and you went Active Duty you would have to pay it back.

You will receive 72 monthly payments. That is 6 years divided into 12 months of your bonus. If you leave the Guard for active service you forfeit any future bonus payments. Used to be the Military paid it all in full many years ago, but many had left for one reason or another before fulfilling their bonus comment. So probably won't have to pay anything back, but then you could be made to pay it back.

Ask the Army NG and the regular Army. No other answer means anything.

Yes you will, money is allocated differently. Rank works the same, so you may drop on.

Check with your Recruiter and in the meantime read your Contract and all the specifics outlined

Talk to a recruiter, I would think switching to active duty wouldn't require you to repay a reinlistment bonus, but a recruiter would be best able to answer that question for sure.
