If I’ve been in for about a year and a half, can I start talking to retention about reclassifying?

PFC (Join to see) 38B is Civil Affairs, you have to go to their Selection and be selected. You can go at any time you like and you'll go to the qualification course right after. Technically, 38B isn't on the list of MOS's that you can go into without a waiver, but you can get the ETP for that.
56M is almost always over strength, but who know in the future. You'll be able to reenlist for reclass in October of this year. You're ETS is in FY23 so FY22 you're eligible to reenlist.
Infantry isn't for most people, but it's the largest MOS, so apparently it is. If you do stay Infantry just remember it promotes much faster than any other MOS, even SF. It also fills half the force generating assignments like ROTC instructor, IG NCO, Recruiter and Drill and others so you're only on the line long enough to get tired and leave. Then you do a broadening assignment for a few years

SFC , I beg to differ about getting promoted fast in the infantry. My friend from OSUT is getting medically reclassed and was moved to brigade S3 ; he got waived to SPC the 2nd week he was moved there . I guess if you love your job you do good . But for me I hate being an 11B.

PFC (Join to see) your one anecdotal story isn't representative of the Army as a whole. Second, E4 is not a promotion, it's an advancement. Any Soldier of any MOS could be advanced to E4 ahead of another. Promotion is E5 and above. Depending on your friends MOS he may still be a SPC or SGT while your fellow 11Bs are pinning on SFC. As an 11B you will pin on SGT and SSG faster than any other rank because the points are so low and there are significantly more ALC class seats available.
Every single 11B PFC who has walked into my office said the Infantry wasn't for them. The majority of them stayed infantry. About half who reclassed hated the reclass and half liked it. You haven't been infantry enough to know if you will like it yet. Most people haven't even figured out if they like the Army yet as a PFC. Especially if they've never held a full time job while paying for their own place, because they have nothing to compare it to.

It’s never too early to talk to your retention NCO. Even before your reenlistment window opens, the unit’s retention NCO can help you identify your future Army goals and career path. A good unit retention NCO can be a great mentor outside of your chain of command.

You have to wait until your retention window opens up which is 15 months before your ets, unless you drop a packet for one the mos that somebody else mentioned here
