If I were to pick up a job at a federal prison, would my active duty time carry over towards a federal retirement?

You can "buy back" your active duty time and it will add one percent for each year to your retirement should you reach retirement with the BOP or any other federal agency.

Thank you, sir. I'm putting in an application with a Federal Correctional Institute and I wanted to make sure I could use my years before I applied.

PO1 Joshua DeWitt - Once you get hired, you'll want to send a request for estimated earnings to the Navy Finance Center. They'll process it and send it directly to you. You will then need to send it to Grand Prairie, where they will calculate your buy-back amount. Get it done early, so you don't accumulate a ton of interest like I did.
Then you can set up a payment plan (the BOP will do a set amount each month), or you can pay it all at once. Your choice.

The man ask if it would count. The answer is yes. I didn't waste time filling in the blanks.
