If World war 3 were to happen. When we send 10’s of thousands of military member to do battle. Does the time spent overseas count towards combat time?
Also what does on do when and if you come back from war? Does one retire or continue your career?

If WW3 happens, don't spend time worrying about your discharge papers.

By any means I’m not worried about them. I was just asking. Let’s say I join the military and BAM! We’re off for WW3. Now at the end of this war and we get to come home. Would all the same normal combat time rules still apply? 6 Months per strip?

SGT (Join to see) - It would really depend. The rules that are in-place now might get re-written at the needs of the government. Stop-Loss, Stop-Move, tour extensions, etc. There's really no way to predict.

SFC (Join to see) That is true. As I stated before I don’t wish a world war for anyone. Just wanted to have a general conversation about it. I appreciate your answer

WWIII. Russia, China, and Iran against the rest of the major players in the free world/NATO. Areas of combat will be designed. If your in then you get combat credit. Once it’s over depending on your status at the time of the start you will return to that status. Medical retirement if required, otherwise you can stay in or get out but all the rules for retirement will stay the same unless changed by congress. There will likely be a surge then a drawdown like in every other major conflict we have even involved in.

Combat is combat. If you're sitting in, let's say, France as a support guy...you're not going to be considered having "been in combat" any more than the POGs that spent their Iraq deployments sitting in a FOB.

I figured that as much. At the end of it, it all depends what the commanders say.

SGT (Join to see) - If it were to happen, everyone involved would also get campaign medals, and hopefully a WW3 victory medal. But our major enemies wouldn't be stupid enough to get into a global conflict with us, since it would ruin their economy and there would be no "end" to be gained like the traditional wars of the past.

Who would be our enemies in a world war? I doubt if their would be anything to come back to. It would be total destruction of an atomic war. Their was a movie made in the 50,s or 60,s that showed what the world would look like after an atomic war. Most people would die of radiation. Everything would be contaminated. Their would be few pockets of survival. Pray their is never another world war.

I don't see WWIII happening, Germany is too weak for Merkel to start it.
1) Of course time in a combat zone counts as being in combat. and 2) I guess they'd do what they did at the end of WWII, either go back to their old jobs because of force downsizing or personal preference, or stay in if they are able/want to.

That makes sense. But do you think that If it did happen and when we won, do you think a downsize would happen?

SGT (Join to see) - It seems to be the pattern after major conflicts like the World Wars or Vietnam, we downsize and then scramble to recruit more people when the next war starts.
