I went to basic with this SM and saw on his Facebook that he went to Prom in his ACU's. How would you go about mentoring one of your subordinates that are in violation of AR670-1?
AR670-1 Chapter 4 Section 3 Line 2... That's what I found in the reg, please attach anything else you find
**EDIT** This is not a Dance, but it is some Formal assembly and to the best of my knowledge he is not on Duty.. Class A's would of been appropriate (as long as it's in regs, which I'm sure isn't hard since he would only have 1 ribbon)

I would tell him that acting like a douche (unless he is on like a recruiter assistance program, in which case good for him) by wearing his utility uniform is negatively affecting the accessions process.

They are in cheerleader outfits.. How formal could it be? If a pvt did this, its obvious either he just didnt know or he is prob like 90% of pvts and have no other clothes..... Lmao..

If his girlfriend/escort didn't rip him up one side and down the other for not dressing more sharply for her, he is a lucky young man indeed.

Part of the reason why I joined the military was the uniform. (Far behind serving my country, defending the constitution and the college fund) To miss an opportunity to stand proud in a real uniform..... sad.

I'm in agreement with the majority of the responders here. Class 'A's would have been a more proper attire.

AR 670-1 is relatively clear on what is and isn't an acceptable place to wear your uniform and which uniform is acceptable for what occasion. I am assuming since he's at prom he's a split-op soldier?

SPC(P) (Join to see) - that's what I was hoping the answer would be. I would set him down, explain and show the reg to him, and suggest he take the photo down.

Interesting
I would Read him the "Riot Act" and introduce him to "AR 670-1" at nose level ...
and Write Him a Scathing Counseling report (or whatever below UCMJ)... and make sure he Understands he "Fire-Trucked Up" by the numbers ...
and I bet ya he don't do it again...
I had a Kid do something like this at 1st Group Sig Det. @ Ft lewis (1991)... he went on to make a Great Electronics Maintenance Warrant officer... and he's Now a CW-5 ...

SFC (Join to see) - How would you handle it if he knew better but wanted attention? This soldier I can't speak for, but I know SM's that would do that

SPC(P) (Join to see) - If the soldier knew it was against regs and did it anyway, they would get a formal counseling session. Not knowing the regs and screwing up is not acceptable but isn't paper worthy either. Knowingly violating regulations is paper worthy since SNCOs are no longer allowed to do wall-locker counselings. 10 - 15 years ago, I would have smoked him until he puked but nowadays - that's just too mean, I guess.

In 1991 hanging paper on someone wouldn't usually ruin their chances to move beyond E04. Hell, in 1991 an Article 15 usually didn't. Now, it could prevent E05 and would most likely prevent them from ever seeing WOBC. I saw good troops passed over for stupid things they did when they were new Soldiers. Troops who would have otherwise made outstanding NCOs and outstanding leaders. At the end of my career, discretion of when to and when not to hang paper on someone became extremely important to their careers. As a young Marine I had three Captain's Masts. I still got my good cookie, meritorious Corporal, and an Honorable Discharge. That doesn't happen anymore.
Things have changed, SFC George Smith, and not all of it is necessarily for the best.

Capt Michael Greene
Maybe he felt it was appropriate to wear ACUs to attend a formal function, surrounded by suits and tuxedos. He's wrong, stupid, and publicly embarrassing. Document it.
