Regarding Army Mess Dress; In a Cavalry Unit, is it OK, to wear a Stetson with Mess Dress while eating? What is the AR for Stetsons? I've looked through the AR 670-1, and can not find mention of the Stetson. Additionally, I am curious what style of cord is allowed for wear with the stetson.

One does not wear any head gear while dining. It is bad form, ungentlemanly, and in bad taste. It also shows a lack of manners as well.

Unless you are a Cav Scout. After what I learned today about Cav Scouts it sounds to e that we take off our head gear while eating simply to pay respect to the Cav Scouts.

SPC (Join to see) - that may be, but it is still in bad form, and impolite, to eat with any hat on

SrA John Monette - Military police while under arms always wore their hat.

SPC Roger Giffen - As a general rule, and IAW regulations, those military personnel bearing arms keep their covers on.

Actually, the Stetson was banned in 1978 by the Army Chief of Staff, along with spurs and tanker boots. Alas, the Tankers and CAV guys can't follow regulations and sniveled so long about not getting their own version of the CIB that they were finally allowed to wear them and the spurs again, under local guidelines. The problem is that you can't separate them from their Stetsons- they now wear them where are NOT supposed to wear them.

How do I know? I was the first and only Infantry CSM for 7-17 CAV (AVN) at Fort Campbell. I was CONSTANTLY either having to correct Warrant Officers or getting calls from the DIV CSM because the troopers were caught wearing them in the wrong places.

Yes, I have mine, and it sits in my home office...I only wore when I HAD to...

They should have found something better than the boot spurs. Of all the Army decorations or whatever that is........that has to be the dumbest in appearance given that the Army disposed of horses so long ago. I could probably live with the hat as long as it was not worn when in duty uniform but the Cav folks always take things too far with the damn Stetson in duty uniform and it ends up the Army looks stupid and they look like country hicks.

CSM, this is an honest question that has bugged me for a long time. We have the CIB and the medics their CFMB, when I was in, I remember seeing similar badges for Armor / Cav as well as Engineers (NOT on anyone's uniform) and I never understood why not issue them for those units along with an Expert level badge. After all, combat is combat?

Do you know the history of the EIB/CIB? They were created to recognize the sacrifice that infantrymen made during the Second WW. The CAB was created to recognize the nature of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars and the 360 degree nature of the ‘front lines’.

You make my point for me- I was the CSM (the ONLY INF CSM there EVER) of an Air Cav Squadron(7-17 CAV) at the 101st- what was the DIV CSM's biggest complaint? Stetsons worn in the wrong places in the wrong uniform.
