In the military why is mid-night spoken one way and written another way?

When we talk about mid-night, we say 2400 but when we enter it in a Watch Standers Log, it is written as zeros. Does anyone know if 2400 really exists or is it 0000

Great question...I never got settled which was which. I just went with 2359 or 0001 and pretended the minute in between didn't exist. Speaking, I would just say midnight.

Dude, I never thought of that! I always used 0000. I've seen that before and never realized that was what they were doing! That's perfect and exactly what an NCO would do!

When speaking, it was always just 'Midnight'. When writing, I was always told to write the stroke of midnight as 2400 then at midnight plus one second it went to zeroes. Never made much sense to me, either, other than a way to designate one date ending and the next beginning.
