Rally Point is a public discussion board hosted by a private company that clearly states there is no formal or legal connection to DoD. Now, if one member accesses a Government Information Network to investigate, with the clear intent to gain personal information of another member for personal reasons, on this public message board, is that a violation of information security laws? Privacy Act? Are Federal charges warranted?

What are your thoughts?

You can research me all you want. I don't care. If its online or on global then I'm not hiding anything. My FB details about me are false just to let any know I have not worked at Mordor as call girl nor have I ever lived in Dildo, Canada (yes, that is the name of the town).

I doubt it. I mean, I can access that info at home with a CAC reader, so it's not terribly likely. If anything, I'd say looking up someone's info for verification purposes could easily fall under counter-intelligence, and should be allowed.

Could this be construed as misuse and abuse of a government network? In other words, not official duty?
Thank you.

It could, I suppose, but it could also be justified relatively easily.

Let's say you want to email someone on here but use work email to say hello basically but there is a problem, you can find that SM in the database. What now?

Is accessing an Official Government information network to investigate a RP member's official information a violation of Federal Law?

Interesting to say the least. Although my 21 was up in 97 I was still in the "Fleet Reserve" until 2006 so I was still subject to military law if need be. I'm sure there are all kinds of interesting dynamics on a Legal Level. Although I'm pretty open about everything and most of the tricks that I knew about as a Spook are Old and Well Known at this point.

Well, how about you verify your account and I'll rescind my accusations?

LTJG James Jones - I have no bones in the present argument, but I've already seen it on this site. I would expect that it's easier to avoid suspicion???

SSgt (Join to see) I guess so. The two most-faked I've seen are E-5 and O-3. I guess those two are assumed to have been around long enough to command respect, but aren't high enough to arouse suspicion.

His account has been locked until he verifies (this is a standard procedure on RallyPoint).

I don't think it is technically speaking.
So what we have is an Airman (E-1) as the culprit because he isn't showing up in the AF GAL, meaning he isn't verifiable??

No law against this that I am aware of. Given the fact that there are terrorist organizations out there that would love to have free access to the info that some members have on their profiles here I would say that it is a good thing they have the verification process in place that they do.

If this AB truly thinks he has been wronged then bring it up to ADC but I suspect that will laugh you out the door.
