Spoke to a recruiter the other day about possible options of reenlisting into the Army. He briefly mentioned that If I were to wait until my 3 years after my ETS date that I'd need to enter into a new contract, as well as attend Basic Training again. This Basic Training would be abbreviated however, since I was prior service it would focus more on Leadership Skills and would only be 6 weeks long. The only information I have found on the topic was from an article by NCOSupport.com (http://www.ncosupport.com/military-news/prior-service-soldiers-in-basic-training.html)

Does anyone have any more information regarding if this is accurate?

I am a current DS and our C Company is exclusively conducting the 6 week prior service cycles. They are basically abbreviated versions of BCT here at Fort Leonard Wood. They definitely see a different version of BCT than the brand new Trainees with expanded privileges and whatnot.

SFC (Join to see) I was active duty and then went into IRR which ends September of this year, since my IRR obligation is not up yet I will not have to go through prior service-BCT, correct?

1st Lt Rev. Dr. David Poedel - It will depend on your contract. Basically the way it worked when I was at Ft Dix was that you wear the rank that your contract specifies and paid at same, but it is considered 'training rank' and only holds weight with your classmates. Once you graduate basic then the rank is considered to be the same as any permanent party member.

I just ran across this thread and am thankful for the info on here. I am considering coming back active duty after being out since 2009. The recruiter said that all prior service are now required to attend the full BCT if out more than 3 years. Any updated feedback on what that is like for a prior service with two combat tours? I am just trying to find out what to generally expect.

Interesting. I was assigned to C Co 6/10 @ FLW with a 8/2/90 graduation date.

I am also prior service reenlisting in the NG, met with my recruiter yesterday, Feb. 12th, infor.ed the prior service basic training will end on March 1st. So any Army or Marine basic training grad WILL NOT have to attend BCT.

SPC Jovani Daviu - I truly hope you lead a life where you accomplish more than a mildly difficult summer camp. That CAN"T be the highlight of your life... there's so much in this world to explore and experience.

Please allow me to clarify that SSG. Basic training was just one of the best moments of my life. I have experienced many before and after BCT. The topic at hand was BCT so I did not elaborate.

I was told today that this program is finished, as of next month. The people in the pipeline already will still do the abreviated course, but then it goes back to the old system.

Any of you have any feedback on prior service veterans who have went back through under the new requirement to attend the full BCT?

Is anyone familiar with the Abbreviated Basic Training being offered to prior-service members with more than a 3-year break from active duty?

I served in the U.S Army National Guard for 3 years(still IRR)and I sat down with a U.S Army AD recruiter last week(1/23/2018) to discuss re-enlistment after a 5 year break in service. I was told that I will not be sent back to basic or AIT. He told me to come back in 90 days 30 pounds lighter because once I sign I will be shipping off to DS within 30 days. It kinda sucks because I was actually looking forward to matbe repeating basic or some sort of school.

No problem. I know how you feel. That is why I joined RallyPoint because I have so many questions about so many different topics pertaining to the military. My recruiter told me I need to meet height and weight standards before sending my packet as well. He also said that if I remained in my same MOS(12W) the process would be much smoother. He did say that I would ship off within 30 days of submitting my packet but the timeframe of me returning to his office is totally in my hands. It's all about how long it takes me to lose the weight. So, maybe I will be able to switch my MOS at MEPS?

You will pick your MOS at MEPS. I just went thru the process. I get sworn in Tuesday. I was told by my recruiter that I will be attending BCT again.

No. I'm looking forward to it too. I been out for 8 years and those extra few weeks of PT will definitely be appreciated. I enjoyed BCT the first time.

A refresher course should be mandatory. Who knows what cheap civilian slime someone has picked up along the way!

Are they using your Active Duty ETS date? Or your end of IRR ETS date?

SGT Jamarl Jones They are using my Active Duty ETS date, which doesn't sound right to me. My IRR ETS date is coming up in May 2018.

Interesting.... There's another memo (rescinded so it's not technically relevant) that states that they should use the IRR date to calculate your 3 year "clock" not the ETS date.

When I was in the Navy other than navy prior service members had to do the full meal deal if they were out greater than 2 years. I worked over at the Bootcamp in San Diego and we had a misinformed soldier show up in his car thinking he was just going to go through a three week orientation program. They did let him keep his car parked behind the barracks but his drill instructor kept the keys until he graduated 9 weeks later.

Thank you CPO Mark Robinson! I'm surprised that the Soldier was able to take their POV to Bootcamp. That information should have been included with their orders, but at least they didn't get into too much trouble.

The three week program Is not really Boot Camp. Its just classroom and the physical fitness test. No ones going to yell at you and you get liberty every day. But that was twenty years ago for me so I'm sure its changed some.

Excellent question. I believe that Ft. Sill should've kept the WTC course. Unfortunately, it ended in 2011.
