It seems that some Soldiers now a days are using Facebook to vent their complaints. During an exercise my unit was participating in had another unit attached for support. One of their Soldiers posted on Army WTF moments that hey didn't have a place to sleep nor food to eat. The Soldier wasn't even in the field for a couple of hours when it was posted. What is going on in some Soldiers minds that they have to go the Facebook before their supervisor.

Trust and speed.

Soldiers are not trusting their leaders and the speed at which social media can gets things exploited are key factors.

Facebook is used as an instrument for open leadership...that is to let go control. however, a military leader can have the sensation of control when they allow their Soldiers to say what they feel. This path is directing the military leader toward a more personal level, personal counseling model.

That's a pretty huge leap to assume that using Facebook is an instrument for open leadership. I can not even comprehend how Facebook or other social media can be an effective leadership tool.
Leaders need to instill trust and discipline in troops or your mission fails before you even deploy. So how do you use Facebook or other social media when there is no access to it? Say in the middle of the battlefield, middle of the ocean, etc.? Facebook and social media is fine for posting pictures and comments for personal reasons but I can in no way comprehend how you can think its a tool for leadership.
I mean I have only been retired just under 10 years now but I do not think you could effectively use any social media for leadership.

PO1, I suppose, that the term is new to many; open leadership. It was designed for social media constructs particularly non profit organizations, post Hurricane Katrina.

Since Hurricane Katrina, this model of leadership has been successful in marketing, such as campaigns and fundraisers.

IMO, it has grown into a social media model in the for-profit industries as well. How it would work in the military organizations, remains out of my area, as I too am retired 18 years now.

SSG Sutter, I think I know what happen based on previous experience. This soldier had to go to the field at the last minute. The initial plan was perhaps to keep him in the rear due to appointments or he may be said or did something that changed someone's mind and in the Army, plans change all the time. So he was transported to the field, and when he reported to his NCOIC, he might have been told someone has to go back to the rear to get more cots and maybe some more rations due to the influx of training participants. I have seen this before. Most soldiers don't make a big deal about it as long as they have a place to lay their head and something to eat. He was probably already upset he had to go to the field so he got on Facebook and ran his mouth or is fingers so to speak. All I have to say to him is get over it. He will survive.

I agree with you on the last part. My section of less than five processed the SIR for him running his mouth off in an child like manner. We got a briefing on exactly what was going on. My question is if more and more Soldiers are going to turn to social media instead of reporting to the correct agency for their issues? I am however curious to know how did you hear about it all the way out there at Bliss.

I was just running through a scenario of what could have happened because I seen it; soldier is going to stay in the rear while everyone else is the field, he runs his mouth and the 1SG says pack your gear and get on the truck.
