Is it a bad idea to use American Military University?

So I’m currently an E-5 interested in going green to gold on the active duty option. I’m trying to make my packet as competitive as possible. I am currently using AMU for my last 18 credits to finish my associates. My worry is that the credits from AMU will not transfer and with the Active Duty option for green to gold I only have 24 months to graduate. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience when transferring credits from AMU to other colleges. Yes I’m aware that personnel on here are not the admissions department from the colleges I just want concrete experience or advice.

I have only ever heard good things about AMU. Several of my friends have gotten their masters through them, and a coworker is working on his BA.

AMU is a "check the box" university. It's perfect for commissioning since it "checks the box" for the degree requirement.
Not knocking it entirely, I've always said it only matters where you FINISHED, not where you started.
If you are going to have problems transferring units it's going to probably be from those classes outside general education that are focused on the major. Generally, lower division courses are easier to transfer.
Have on hand the course catalog, the descriptions of the classes, and ideally the course syllabus to support any push back there might be for classes you want to transfer.
Be aware, many universities carry a minimum requirement of courses you need to take with them before you will be granted a degree. So if you are heavy on the transferred units you might need to take extra course just to meet the minimum.

Sir,
Thank you for the advice and I agree with your philosophy. I may not be able to see the checkered flag just yet BUT I'm getting closer and closer each day. All of the advice I've gotten on this so far has been great so thank you for giving me some additional advice. At this point, I feel that I have a good amount of information to fulfill a plan A B and C. I am calling the advisement team as we speak about the requirements for graduation. Thanks for this advice sir I didn't even think of this.

No, it doesn't matter WHERE you finish and get a degree. Your information is 1000000% outdated. Yes that used to be a thing back in like 1970. Now in 2020, having a degree is all it is. Even then, just because you have a BA at John Hopkins vs, a BA at San Mateo Community College. They both hold the same weight. What it comes down to is experience. Same goes for MBA/MHA. Doesnt matter WHERE you get it. Do you have experience in this field? School is great for a "check in the box" but thats all it is. A check in the box. Thus, it doesn't matter WHERE you get it. The employer cares you have experience. John Hopkins graduate, in business management with 0 management experience whatsoever, vs University of Phoenix, graduate in business management with 5 years of experience. Who are you going to hire?

Sgt J W - Only in the military does it not matter. It literally is check the box, but I assure you "where" will start to matter once one wants postings as a professor at military academies.
Walk into Goldman Sachs and try getting a stock analyst job with a Finance Degree from Chico State. Can it be countered with experience? Yea, but not on equal footing when the degree is the tie breaker.
I have two associate degrees, two bachelor degrees, an MBA (Finance) and hold the CFA designation, all backed with 20 years in finance. Its who you blow, not what you know that matters.
Funny you mention San Mateo. We might literally be neighbors.
AMU is accredited and is legit. It checks the box, but folks aren't knocking down their door as a cost effective option to Harvard or MIT. AMU fills a need for active duty service members looking to check the box.
Question: How may service members are getting full rides from the military for advanced education at AMU as their sole duty station? I could be entirely wrong. I don't know the numbers, but I'd be surprised if it was any meaningful amount.

Perhaps it depends what proffesion you are planning to enter with the use of your degree. I will certainly say, you are right that it's who you blow and unfortunately that is how our world crumbles. With trying to get into HR for a hospital, a degree isn't enough, they want experience regardless of where you got your degree from, if you have a track record of experience that's going to hold heavy weight but again I guess it depends where and what you are trying to do.

I used AMU to get an Undergraduate Certificate, since I already have a Bachelors Degree.
I am pretty sure that your credits will transfer. That's one of the things I looked at, in case I wanted to build upon that certificate. Good Luck!

I'm glad that I read this post because I once thought about going to AMU, I figured you would be able to transfer your credits since its friggin AMU but you should check out University of Phoenix online. They start new classes every month, and each class is only 5 weeks long, 3 credits each. If you sign up with them, also look into Sophia Learning LLC, google it. You can take classes on here which can be used for University of Phoenix as well. I graduated 4 months early, they had a special covid-19 thing and allowed UOPX students to sign up for free and take classes, and those credits transferred to phoenix immediately. Since you only got 18 credits left, at UOPX, you are looking at 6 classes, so 30 weeks total so 7.5 months. You can double up on classes too and they are pretty easy. Online classes, weekly discussions, have to make 3 consecutive posts throughout the week, 1 before thursday, and then respond to 2 different classmates post. Do the assignment work which is generally like 1 assignment. 5 weeks, and an easy 3 credits.

AMU is accredited and also a member of the APUS (American Public University System). Those alone should make credit transfers a reality. However, give them a call and find out [login to see]

In theory, you shouldn’t have any issue transfering any credits from one accredited school to another accredited school.
