I am trying to move my career forward into Special Operations and not stay stagnant with this GTC issue but I am getting a lot of kick back and would like to know what my options are. Citibank advised that I should apply when the contract was renewed but BN and Co personnel in my unit did not submit the paperwork when it needed to be submitted after I had submitted it to them. Now I am looking at the possibility of never having a GTC again. This means I am extremely limited on what I can do in the reserves and possibly ending my career in the military altogether. I have been preparing for Special Operations for a few years now and only joined the military with the goal of reaching special operations. Ending my career over something like this will be devastating. Any guidance/help will be most appreciated.

BLUF: All E5 and above should have a GTC.

First question would be - why was your Travel Card closed twice?? I've been in over 20 years and have never had my GTC "closed" on me. Was it because you didn't pay your bills? Unit Commanders can request issuance of GTCs to Soldiers with less than ideal credit scores...you will be limited on your "credit limit"...but it is do-able. PLEASE don't tell me you used your GTC for TDY, filed your voucher, got paid...but used the money for something other than paying off your card. (Only saying that because it happens ALL THE TIME...and then Soldiers look at me with "deer in the headlights" looks.)

What is this "Special Operations" you've been preparing for? That's not an MOS, or even a job. It's a Command, it's a place where you work. That's like saying I've been preparing for FORSCOM. The only SOCOM unit with 11B is the 75th Ranger Regiment. Whichever you plan on joining, if it's taken you years to prepare, you'll never be ready. Selections aren't about being in shape. They are designed to wear you out and find out what kind of person you really are when everything sucks...to see when you quit, if you are lazy when you're tired, or if you are the kind of person who keeps pushing till he's dead.
Regardless, all position in USASOC require a Secret clearance. If you can't get a GTC then you probably aren't eligible for a Secret clearance.

The key thing missing is your eligibility for a GTC from a credit risk standpoint. The Govt can put you forward but the Credit company can turn you down. Credit ratings really have to be in the tank for that as the Feds have the split disbursement on liquidation thing where the Credit company assumes less risk. If the local command isn't sponsoring you, it's for a reason that's unrelated to GTC and you should look there. Bottom line, make sure you have credit eligibility for the GTC. At that point if the Government wants you to travel, then they have to sponsor you. Between the JTR and Financial regs, they really don't have a choice.
