I've seen a new E-5 in my unit with the deployment OCP (the shoulders are Velcro pockets like the ACU not zippers, faintly faded, with a fuller only jacket zipper) without a deployment patch, or skill badges I.E CIB, AAS, Etc. he approached me for work and as we were talking he brought up how things worked at his last unit, and I asked him where he was deployed to and he said he wasn't (No right shoulder patch) but from what I understood those OCP's we're only given out to those who have been deployed to the Middle East the last year or so. Can anyone clarify on this? Thank you.

Sgt Tim Horton - That's cute. A Marine is going to tell an Army NCO about a MILPER message she received at her 3rd duty station. No really, it's adorable. BTW, since you're so concerned about capitalization, Congress is capitalized, too. Oh, yeah...you're still just a Department of the Navy, LMK when you're your own branch...oh wait, didn't I hear recently that some Secretary of Something wanted to get rid of the Marines altogether? Carry on.

Even if it's authorized for wear, why would you want to if you didn't go?

After scanning this thread I came away with the following:
SGM Marquez's flow chart is epic in it's brevity.
When an airman gets uppity, it's ALWAYS an A1C.
Some people you just can't reach. It's just a uniform.

Sure it is. In fact, I gave mine to my son who came in in '13, so he wouldn't have to wear the ugly ass UCP ACUs any more. Also, you are not required to wear badges or SSI-FWTS on ACUs. I have known many NCOs and Os that didn't wear them. Even though this NCO didn't deploy you shouldn't judge by what is attached to their uniform. Judge them by how the lead.

Yeah they RIFFED most of them and didn't even care ! There are and were times I failed to even recognize the Army I joined in 75 . Watched us climb out of the hole that Ford and Carter put us in and then saw Regan boost us back up and then the first Bush and Clinton kick us to the curb AGAIN ! Then they needed us once again after 9-11 and we hit the happy times as far as being treated the way the military should be . Then o'bummer gutted our officer and high ranking NCO's because they didn't kiss his ass and bend over . The group in charge now plans to gut us again , things just can't seem to stabilize and allow us to be what we all are - HONEST , FAITHFUL , LOYAL AMERICANS who swore an oath to this Nation ! We had four years to rebuild then bam another bunch who hates us in control , I'm hoping we retain enough of the main core to weather this storm and once again rise to being treated as loyal troops to this great Nation . As for the VA all we can do now is hope for the best . Sorry state of affairs' we're in again !

I met a leader who was pasted with medals, bars, oakleaf clusters, etc, yet he was only an O3. This O3 believed in leadership under fire. Another leader with less across his chest and higher ranking followed the leadership style I-CARE and U-CARE; Solutions First. Which leader was more successful, if both had the same PEBD?

SGT(P) (Join to see), when you say Os, are you referring to CGOs, FGOs, GOs, WOs, CWOs, MWOs, SCPOs or others? Very strange usage of Os.

And when you fail to challenge them to seek the knowledge you will never build future leaders. Snubbing someone and guiding them towards knowledge are two completely separate factors. As a young NCO I challenge you to challenge your subordinates to grow. Leaders create new leaders, toxic people who think they’re in charge create angry followers who eventually quit. SFC Benjamin Harrison - LOL, I often challenged my leaders to look up the regs, as I knew them better than then did. I usually would only challenge on BS issues, and for those I knew page, chapter and paragraph. Very few bothered to do the research. I made it into kind of a game. Anything that didn't sound right, I would looke it up, verify if it was covered in unit SOP, and let the games begin.

SFC (Join to see) No, RallyPoint is a place where you go and get opinions about things, and "Well in my day this is the way we did things". If are one is actually interested knowing the answer to a question you have to ask, "What regulation covers ... and is it appropriate for me to bring this up in this manner, if not how should I do it and why?" Otherwise you will get a lot of "information" that may be completely off base, and tank your career.

SPC (Join to see) SPC while I can appreciate the sentiment behind your post, it is disrespectful to an NCO. I advise you not to behave in this manner. Remember the 1st Amendment does not apply to members of the Armed Forces, and spellcheck is your friend.

SPC (Join to see) Soldiers are not E-5 or whatever, you call the person by their Rank (in that case Sergeant).

I cant imagine it's that big of a deal. Everyone in yhe army is a soldier, like everyone in the marines is a maring, navy sailors, air force airmen. Now obviously context matters in terms of respect. But generally i dont think this needs correcting

For everyone asking why he didn't ask the SGT right on the spot, most of the replies here show exactly why. A young soldier is looking for information and he gets jumped on and basically verbally assaulted for trying to gain knowledge. Way to go guys, keep up the stellar treatment.

I think what he is trying to explain is that there is a way to ask a question that belies an honest answer, and a way to ask a question that is sharpshooting the leadership. The Soldier was not looking for the answer, in as much as he was trying to snipe this young Sergeant. Let's not act niave here.

As one of those well acquainted with the sea going services, I could go and try to find all the acronyms and abbreviations used by the ground pounders,,. But I was lost with the beginning question which was never fleshed out.

What is the actual issue here? Asked the addled sailor.

Poor kid asked for clarification on a uniform and if it was being worn correctly. Best responses thus far have been the ones that have either responded directly by telling him or showing where to look. (Most of those were from senior NCOs, which says alot.) Why you ripping this kid up, merely asked a question to something he thought MAY have been wrong and wanted clarification.

SGT (Join to see) - Rofl..well..
1.keyboard warrior, others seem to agree with me.
2. I call him "kid", because when a leader has Soldiers under him, they begin to feel like your own children, in all aspects, the good, the bad, the ugly.
3. Thankfully retired, so that probably ages me a little. As a past DS as well, they are kids..can't explain it, if you don't get it...you never will.
Done explaining myself to you though. Plenty of experience, plenty of leadership time. You have some time left..might want to figure things out before it gets rough. Take care SGT. Enjoy your office.

You can be issued OCP, while not being deployed to a Combat Zone. I have been issued 3 sets, 3 times for 3 Non Combat "Deployments" (Training Rotation) to Europe for Operation Alantic Resolve. You can have them with out being actually deployed.

Except SFC Moore I don't believe the PFC was asking if the uniform was being worn correctly but rather if the SGT was allowed to wear the uniform without a right shoulder SSI. I believe the best responses were the guided thinking ones that directed the young PFC to read and understand the authorizing documents. He knew the uniform was authorized to wear in garrison, he only questioned the SGT when he found out he had never deployed. The PFC knew where to find the answer, he just didn't like the answer he found there.

Seems like he asked a question respectfully to me. No need to light him up for being curious about regulations on wear of uniforms, and that's probably why he asked on a forum instead of questioning his leadership.

NCOs, quit dumping on this PFC for asking a question! SFC Benjamin Harrison made a good point, LEAD him to the answer. That is what NCOs do. Dirtbag soldiers are made by dirtbag NCOs that don't LEAD. His question was asked in a respectful manner, so he deserves a respectful response.

Reading through this string reminded me of why I don't often visit this site. My apologies to those who tried to be helpful and professional; to the original and subsequent posts. But I'm dismayed and disgusted by the number of nasty, childish, and completely unprofessional statements made my individuals whose claimed rank would lead one to expect better from them.
