Is it possible for me to switch from Army to Air Force before my ETS date next year? This is my first enlistment.

No, it's not possible. You cannot get out of your active duty contracts for inter-service transfer.
Additionally, the Air Force very rarely accepts prior service Soldiers, unless you hold a specialized skill.

Go to an AF recruiter, and tell him your situation. He will give you this form http://www.au.af.mil/au/holmcenter/afrotc/documents/dd0368.pdf You will have to fill it out, and push it up the chain. I don't know what your units SOP for it will be. When I got my conditional release, I had to get okayed by PSG to turn in my gear, cleared by supply, get counseled on my decision to switch, have a state specific letter signed by company commander, and BC; before the whole packet was sent up to State G1 where it was signed off by a General. Sounds like a lot of racket, but it wasn't too bad, as my company's admin NCO was on top of his game, and actually did his job! Good luck on your future career.

There are NO conditional releases from the Army for inter-service transfer...especially since we're now 16,000 short since the drawdown was halted.

It's possible but as I understand not easy, I would follow what the SSgt said and speak with an Air Force Recruiter. You're eventually going to have to talk with S1 and Supply, and probably a Career Counselor and I think it needs to get signed off by your BN Commander.

You could possibly look at what is called a conditional release. My husband was released from the Army to join the coast guard but it took several months and a lot of prodding to make it happen. The conditional release was granted too late. If you go through with this be ready to see it through.

Yes SGM. His conditional release went all the way up to HQ component ,but it took several months to get there. He ets'd out of the active component and opted not to serve in the reserve component.

I did, I switched from the Army to the Air Force, but that was in 1986. It wasn't that difficult to do. I'm not sure if anything has changed since then, I'm sure it has. You definitely have to talk to a recruiter first.

SPC Dominque Lee My kid brother was definitely told to take a discharge after his first enlistment. We other two brothers wanted him to taste civilian life! He chose a short discharge for immediate reenlistment for Vietnam. If you want out of the Army after one tour, why do you think the Air Force would be more to your liking?
