I took the asvab once in October and score a 51. GT score 98.

My recruiter told me I’m not allowed to retest. At all. He said he’s not allowed to ask for a request to let me retest. I want to raise my GT in score but definitely raise the 51 as well, mainly for job opportunities. I’m pretty limited right now. He said I’m only allowed to do that if I failed or if I’m aiming for a specific job (which that is my reasoning). It’s a little frustrating because I haven’t spoken to anyone yet who said they weren’t allowed. I even have friends who scored 79-85 and were able to retest. The situation doesn’t make sense to me and I feel extremely pressured and bullied into settling for this. My recruiter said I’m just going to have to take whatever job is open, do what I gotta do and then worry about raising my score once I’m already at my duty station.

Recruiters don’t want you retesting because if you get a lower score, you have to go off of that score. You are allowed to retest.

I'm pretty sure I have taken the ASVAB at least 4 times. There is a mandatory time limit between testing, so you can't just take it every week, but you can retest. You do not have to settle for jobs available now with your current score. If you are looking at a particular MOS, continue to study for the ASVAB and retake it in 6 months. Hold out for what you want. If you sign a contract now, you may never get the MOS you want.

If you are already in the DEP, please advise. Poaching is probably stretching RP Terms of Service.

Is it possible to get a re test on the asvab even if you passed?

I don't remember the re-test limits. All your recruiter can do is know that and submit a request to MEPCOM for you to test. Does no good to try early, as it will be rejected. The RS Ops can get a read on your status to test. You have a 51 so unless it has changed, go see the Marine recruiter before deciding.

Sit with the MEPS counselor first and see what they offer. If you don't meet the prerequisites for the job you want - and there are training seats available - then ask to retest.

Your 51 score doesn't mean anything. Your ASVAB score isn't used to determine your job, the line scores like ST, GT, MM, GM etc do. Your 51 isn't a score, it's a percentile. It means you tested middle of the road compared to your peers, it doesn't tell you what your GT is

1SG Mark Flowers that's a very good point and I always forget that USAREC has separate incentives for different groups

SFC (Join to see) I want to set myself up for Civil Affairs. So my main concern is my GT score because that disqualifies me. So I didn’t know if it’d be smarter to just get my foot in the door now and adjust things later. Also from my research you can’t enlist directly as civil affairs with active duty?

Ashley Nicole no you cannot enlist as civil affairs. There are opportunities in the Army to take a class that is geared towards raising your line scores. They average an increase of 10 points on your GT score

What’s the point of you testing then? You trying to get another job right? You won’t have to do another physical and overnight stuff butt other things you might cause you trying to change jobs. It will affect your MEPS process cause your trying to changes jobs right?Ashley Nicole

Ashley Nicole - I didn't realize you were that far down the road with the process. It sounds like your recruiter has actually put in quite a bit of effort to do your waivers and get your enlistment processed. Rules on things like this do change frequently, but I believe the last I heard you had to wait at least a month after your initial test to retest, then one more month before your third test, then 6 months between any further tests. In doing some further research online, everything is saying that recruiters "are not allowed to schedule a retest for the sole purpose of increasing scores to qualify for enlistment incentives, job qualifications, or other special enlistment programs."

What MOS are you looking at? You may be able to do a line point exception (GT score waiver), instead of trying to fight the system and get an ASVAB retest?

You can retest. I think the reason the recruiter doesn't want you to, besides the reasons already stated, is that if you retake it and do worse than what you already scored the most recent test is the one they have to go with. It is a gamble that most, if not all, recruiters will not take.
