I have an RE3 Code (behavioral health chapter). It was labeled as a temporary condition. 2 years ago I was told i could get a waiver easily. Last month when I asked a recruiter and relayed the events as before, I was told I can't get a waiver. I'm now confused if i can get one or not. Do these recruiters just not want to deal with my case or am I just screwed out of any enlistment because i had temporary depression 4 years ago? Thanks for info in advance. Also i meet height and weight now and my papers are in check.

While on active duty I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Later I was discharged under a chapter 5-13 for “personality disorder”. It’s still an Honorable Discharge but it is given an RE3. I was told prior to getting out that Reenlistment was still possible but would require a waiver.

Years after my discharge I graduated from college and decided to Reenlist. However in most cases a recruiter would not touch any of my request. I was told that I needed to change my narrative of separation or it would be impossible.

I later discovered that my discharge was inaccurate as I was never properly diagnosed. After finding this out I gathered as much supporting documentation as I could including, medical records both civilian and military, academic achievements before, during and after the military, character references, criminal background checks, full psychological evaluations from multiple physicians, etc. and submitted an appeal to the Army Board of Corrections for Military Records. It took three years to get a response but I got my appeal approved and was issued an addendum to my dd214 and given a dd215. The board agreed that my discharge was inaccurate and that I did not meet the criteria for a “personality disorder” discharge so my narrative was changed to “other physical or mental condition”.

I continued to see multiple recruiters until I was able to find one that was willing to work with me. We submitted all of paperwork and packet to meps to do a physical and i was approved to phys. This alone was a long and tough process but I was give a DQ at meps with a PULHES of 111113 which still requires a waiver. Reason being that regardless or not my narrative discharge was changed, I still had depression and anxiety in my med records. We submitted a waiver with all of my paper thus far and it was recently DENIED!

I am still in the process of collecting additional documentation to resubmit another wavier request.

A waiver is possible for what you mentioned but it is not easy. It’s more about how much you want it. Keep at it and good luck.

Could get one is not the same as will get one. Your chances of getting a waiver for BH is very slim. If the recruiter told you that you would not get one, he told you that for one of two reasons: he knows for a fact that you will not get one so why take the time and effort; or he just doesn't want to take that chance. You can always try a different recruiter at a different station. But, while an RE-3 can be waiverable, what does your DD214 say in Block 26 for Separation Code? That may not be waiverable.
