I signed up for my MOS with bonus, and I was told by my recruiter that I have 6+2 years of active reserves and IRR. However, when I looked at my contract, it says I have 8 years of active reserves and 0 year of IRR. Basically none of the people I asked (Reserves/NG) have a contract with 8 years of active drilling. I told my DS at basic and they told me to get it fixed at AiT, and the platoon SGTs told me to get it fixed at my unit. I am now a TPU soldier. Is it possible to get it changed?

Also, seek out the Retention NCO that serves your unit

Doubt it. You will need to speak with your RPAC/S1 personnel. Because you will now run the risk of possibly losing your bonus that is tied to your current contract. Again, you need to speak with your RPAC/S1 personnel for clarification.

Got it, My supply sergeant told me I can request for IRR after 6 years. However, my cash bonus locked me to my MOS for 8 years. Can I stay in my MOS for 6 years and request for IRR without losing my bonus?

SPC (Join to see) - Negative. If that is even granted, you could lose what's left of your bonus and be required to pay back what payments you've already received.

So you want to be one of the sad sacks crying because they're age 60 with no retirement... because they got out or went IRR.. how many jobs give retirement benefits for part timers... Don't be foolish...

The problem is not that, I’m looking to reclassify of change to a different unit after 6 year, but my contract simply does not allow that because my bonus is tied to 8 years.

Is it possible to modify your reserves contract from 8 years to 6 years?

All initial contracts say that. No, you cannot modify your contract.
What it means is that you signed a contract for 8 years whether that is 2,4 or 6 years that are actually active and the remainder is in the reserve or the IRR. All contracts initially are like that regardless of service, regardless of whether you are Active Duty, Reserve, or National Guard.

Look all commitments are for 8 years service period- its in the break down were it matters- instance 2 yrs AD+ 6 yrs IRR or NG or AR. Now if you have signed the contract then that is exactly what you have, and it will be a pain to fight it. Get with S1, JAG ASAP

First of all everyone that joins is obligated for 8 years. I have been in for a min or two. I have never seen a 8 yr contract either. Active, Guard or Reserve. Check with your Retention or S1 people to confirm. Keep one thing in mind. If you legitimately have an 8 yr contract with a bonus . That bonus is for the entire contract anything that you do to alter that contract potentially will change that bonus (loose or reduce). So As I said get with S1 and your Retention people.

All enlisted personnel entering the reserves for the first time will incur an eight-year Military Service Obligation (MSO); typically 6+2. Which means, following your initial six (6) years, you'll be placed in an individual ready reserve (IRR) status for the remaining two (2) years. If you're contract say's eight (8) years of active drilling reserves, there's not much you can do as you're under a contractual obligation. Most bonuses are tied to a six (6) year commitment. So, after you've completed your initial six (6) years, you could request a transfer to IRR or a conditional release (DD Form 368) to pursue active duty or another branch.

Thank you. When I looked at the contract for my bonus, it is tied to a eight (8) year commitment. Am I stuck for 8 years if I want to keep the bonus? Will they take it away, including the amount I received, if I transfer to IRR after 6 years?

That's good question. How is your bonus paid? You'll need to refer to your contract's language. If a portion of your bonus is paid on a yearly basis, then you'll forego the remaining payments if you transfer to IRR after six (6) years. If you were paid half (1/2) at year three (3) and the other half (1/2) at year five (5) or year six (6), then more than likely no recoupment will apply.

Always read the fine print....line by line. And when you're done, read it again.
