A little background—I have 2 bachelors degrees, one in Biology with a pre-med emphasis, and another in Radiologic Sciences. I’m currently a registered Radiologic Technologist with certifications in radiography, computed tomography, vascular interventional and cardiac interventional. My question is, I’m joining the ARNG and my recruiter has me on the tract to do BCT, followed by OCS, then BOLC and he states I’m not guaranteed a medical branch following OCS. Where I am confused is that it doesn’t look like medical falls into any of the basic branches that I could get into when I graduate OCS. I have not been able to locate an AMEDD recruiter in the North Georgia area to discuss this with. Am I on the right tract? The ultimate goal is IPAP, and I’m aware I do not need a medical MOS to apply, but I would like to work in the field I have a passion for if granted the opportunity.

By using the OCS pathway instead of an AMEDD recruiter, you’re not guaranteed to go into the Medical Service Corps. An AMEDD recruiter can get you commissioned directly as a 70B. Call [login to see] .

I’m likely going to go National Guard, not AD. Would this change things?

LTC Broom is correct about AD. Call [login to see] for the Georgia NG AMEDD recruiter. I wish you the best of luck and hope you get exactly the job you’ll love.

You should find a medical recruiter! Not just one for the Army, but one for the Air Force and Navy. I recognize you might have done this before signing up with the Army Guard. Talk to all of the recruiters and take the offer that satisfies your personal goals. If the Army Guard won't guarantee you commissioning into Medical Corps, then look around. There's Air Guard, Army, Navy, and Air Force Reserves. If you haven't ruled it out, you might also consider active duty.

My daughter is a Nurse Practitioner. She went through a similar drill to yours. She talked to all of the Service's Medical Recruiters. Even though she had over 8 years enlisted in the Air Guard, the Navy Reserve offered her the best deal so she took it. She started as an O-3 with full credit for her Guard and Inactive Ready Reserve time. She's now a LCDR (O-4) in the Navy Nurse Corps. BTW, her Medical OCS was about two weeks. No Basic because she was prior enlisted.

Since your focus in in the ARNG there might be an option... Don’t quote me! Your state NG has the flexibility to allocate you based on its needs and your educational background so if you could do not hesitate and contact a unit which you might be interested (schedule an office call with its leadership), present your self and let them know about your desires. An AMEDD recruiter will most likely work with you for both Regular Army and Army Reserves.

Is Medical Service Corps available as a branch option for OCS graduates in the GA NG?

I just called and that’s the Nashville line. I was given a number from the NG chat on the website for a AMEDD recruiter in the ATL area but both numbers I was given definitely don’t belong to her.

My wife is a 68W but she is an RN. She plans on direct commissioning once she finishes her BSN. That is always an option as well.

If it like the active service, it doesn't. This happened to me. I was an X Ray tech with a bachelors degree and I became a transportation/logistician. Unless you are a nurse or in some btanches a PA, you will end up in another field

Re-examine your options,if he is an enlisted recruiter he will have limited options and information. Before your sign anything talk to a officer enlistment specialist. You may qualify for OCS enlistment as an officer. An officer will have information to other areas the other recruiter may not have, know or is willing to share. He is looking for enlistment numbers.SO always do a little more research. Also look into GSA contracts as well the VA and other medicals are searching for good people.
