Preppers
What is your opinion of Prepping? Have extreme preppers and the media given it a bad image or is reasonable preparedness a good thing? Also yes, I realize I spelled Society incorrectly in the survey, typing too quickly. :-)

SSG Ronald Williams I look at Prepping as a precautionary measure. Why not be prepared, JUST in case. Contingency plans are not a bad thing. I remember back to my beginning days in the ARMY. Hearing my Drill Saying, If you fail to Plan, then Plan to Fail. It has stuck with me. Also, my boy scout days... Always be prepared. Now Within reason, I don't have a year's worth of supplies or a back yard Fallout Shelter, but I have items of necessity. I put what I can away and I purchase good deals when they are around. I'm not a crazy Prepper but a logical planner.

SFC Charles S. That is exactly how I feel. I do not prep for doomsday, but it seems like being prepared, which I view as an intelligent thing to do, has developed a negative stigma in our society.

SSG Ronald Williams that's ok, because when those that have not prepared come knocking on the doors of those at are prepared they will learn the truth quickly. I'm not sure if it was the TV Shows about prepping that gave it the bad stigma but it surely didn't help. I watch Walking Dead and what they are going through is to a degree what a full breakdown would be like... now I'm not saying zombies or anything but the lack of useful government and other nice things to have that won't work if there is a breakdown.

When I was a kid like most of you guys, the story of the grasshopper and the ant really stuck with me, I said to myself don't want to be that damn grasshopper.

As with most surveys on RP, none of the choices really accurately fit.

There's nothing inherently wrong with prepping for emergencies, especially ones with reasonable (even if still small) chances of happening.

The common connotation of "prepper", though, isn't simply that, but of someone obsessed with doing so, spending tons of time, energy and money planning for often ridiculous circumstances.

If you're building a fallout bunker because you're afraid the U.S. is going to declare martial law and swarm over your land, you need a psych eval, not encouragement.

I personally think it is irresponsible to not be prepared in case of emergencies, especially in cases where one is the head of a household. It is not the governments responsibility to take care of you in the case of an emergency.

SGT Michael Touchet Yes, that is exactly it. Someone who doesn't look ahead is being irresponsible.

SFC Charles S. we see all over the world every day, examples of why we should be prepared for disasters. Nepal is the most recent, men, women and children are going hungry with no place to take shelter. I just don't know how I could face my family if I were to let them down as a husband and father.

SGT Michael Touchet Yes, exactly... Those two things make you responsible... HUSBAND and FATHER. Family is job 1...and it is about making them priority when you plan for them. I feel the same way, If I didn't plan and have their needs covered I couldn't look them in the eye either.

TSgt Hunter Logan that is true, you have to have a plan to bug out with what you can carry if your house becomes compromised. I personally always keep several extra five gallon cans of fuel cases of water small generator sleeping shelter and several changes of clothes for all seasons. Kinda like I spent some time in the military being ready to deploy at a moments notice... oh wait I did do that lol

You should prep. You should not depend on the federal or local governments to come to your rescue. I think the Mayor of Baltimore proved that last week when police failed to protect private property. Everyone should have some cash saved up and a few weeks worth of food. Most people can not do this over night or in a few paychecks but doing it over time is not a bad deal nor is it unreasonable.

SSG (ret) William Martin Yes, good call, I don't want to wait on a handout while there are people who would be standing their waiting to kill you for it. I saw how the food distribution went in Somalia. Fighting over cups of Rice... Nope won't be this retiree.

Prepping is probably important....for 2-4 weeks. Those that prep for greater durations are really planning for the collapse of the world as we know it. 2-4 weeks is reasonable for natural disasters.

Society's historically fail, given one reason or another it is one of the other constants like death and Taxes, I moved out to the counrty so what one person calls prepping I call grocery shopping, however I do prep, I have no idea what disaster will come if ever, but I feel that it is a far smarter idea to have food on hand along with ammo. I personally feel too many people rely on government entirely to much.

Preparation is fine, so long as you're not wasting money on stuff that just isn't going to happen... Prioritization is key...

Most of the Zombie prep stuff is fine. Stick with food, water, mobile shelter, leave the katanas and Middle earth swords at the mall counter.

The voices in my head say "you're crazy" but the government/alien forced implant says "Obey Your Leaders!" So I'm conflicted. Lol

I used to think that the preppers on the TV show were a bit out there, but in light of Ferguson and Baltimore, I'm coming around to their viewpoint. And looking to relocate away from major population centers. Homesteading looks like fun...
