I had a friend that was a Marine. One day I said something like, "hey I just found out that the Marines are actually a part of the Navy." Without missing a beat he says, "Yea the male part".

When I think of 'a branch' I think of the Spring... Dark green leaves reaching out through the Virginia coastline up into the Appalachian Piedmont ..... Long Island; not so much, but green leaves just the same....

Never thought of the Marine Corps as a 'branch.' A pack maybe. or a herd, but not a branch... To be a branch I imagine you have got to be attached to something bigger than yourself....

Well, dang, excuse me.... Maybe the Marines are a branch after all. I stand corrected.... A branch of that huge old oak tree.... The tree that wooden ships are made and who's decks are manned by men of steel... That's it.... Toddlers learning from their older brothers... those swashbuckling Navy types.... That's something to be proud of.... and learned .... Is there a ribbon for that...

You gotta excuse me Will Boyd.... I just couldn't help it.

You missed your calling as a stand-up comedian. Your writing is poetic though. I prefer Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah's.

I had completely forgotten Shenandoah ... my mind was picturing Norfolk west through all the country I hitchhiked over and over just to get back into the mountains for a few hours at a time.... It wasn't until years later that I took my first drive through the Shenandoah valley... and then along the ridge .... and then back again...If you aren't near God on a trip like that there ain't no future.

Yes...but not totally independent.

The Marines are part of the Navy. But they're most DEFINATELY not Sailors.

The Corps is part of the DEPARTMENT of the Navy, but not the US Navy. C'mon Chief, you ought to know that and not invite an argument by leaving of Dept.

LtCol George Carlson - Ahhh, now here we go!

Marines are, historically and practically, naval infantry. Their historical role, which continues to this day, are to help maintain discipline and order aboard ship, boarding of vessels during combat or capture of ships, and manpower for raiding shore based targets in support of naval objectives. They specialize in sea and land combat, which means they support both the Navy and Army. In the Untied States, they started out as a guard force for naval vessels during our independence war.

And yes, they also conduct their own Marine operations.

They ARE part of the Navy in this country...but they are there OWN service branch with their OWN representative on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Who pays the Marines? The Navy.

;)

Now, that said...the Marines have evolved quite a bit over the centuries. Used to be there was very little difference between a marine and a sailor. Call it a specialty in the sailor's rates, essentially, like all the other things people used to sign up for in the Navy. They eventually became a highly specialized force, developing their own distinct culture and eventually (in this country) their own service branch...but still under the Navy (again...in this country).

My opinion of the Marines?

Ain't no better combat infantry in the world. Period.

Maj John Bell - Oh I definitely agree Major. I've dealt with the CG for most of my life. First in the Navy when they sent a detachment to my ship for LEO ops, and then as a Merchant Mariner. They definitely get the short stick when it comes to respect from other services, because most people (this isn't meant to be a blanket statement of course) in the other services simply don't realize the scope of what the CG does on a day to day basis. Among other things, they are in near-constant contact with drug dealers and cartels, in addition to the more well-known duties they perform, like rescues. Did you know they have a sniper course that specifically teaches shooters to shoot small-boat engines from a helicopter? Yeah. If I had to do it all over again, CG would be my choice.

SN Greg Wright - I didn't, but I could never be a coastie or a sailor... I hate the smells of ship board life. I swear you could serve on a three masted schooner and everything would still reek of diesel. My favorite day being a Marine was any day getting off ship, no matter how.

Maj John Bell - It's definitely not for everyone, though I suspect you have nearly as much sea time as a lot of Sailors. Anyway, here's a good documentary episode on CG snipers. It's 40+ minutes long, but gives a good idea of what they do.

The Coast Guard is a military branch of service (one of the five Armed Forces) at all times, period. Does not matter if regularly under Dept. of Homeland Security. There has been Coast Guard Medal of Honor recipient who died while saving hundreds of Marines. How can I make my point any clearer?

Although falling under Department of the Navy, it is a branch of the armed forces along with the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, US Public Health Service and NOAA.

No, they are part of the Department of the Navy. They are a service, they are a DOD component. They are most anything but a branch. Branch has a lot of different meanings in the military. There are only three military departments. Army, Navy, Air Force.
