I have loved the show since episode 1. The characters, the interactions, the backstory everything. All shows and movies take a lot of dramatic license with the truth, we know that so how does this measure up?

Walmart has the seasons 1-8 for $12.95 a pop or 2 seasons for $19.95 so I've been indulging myself so as not to solely rely on the USA network full time for my fix.

I can't speak to its authenticity, but I love the show and LOVE Mark Harmon!
I like NCIS LA too but not as much.

I agree with the authenticity comment above but love the honesty and integrity while trying to fight terrorism. And, the LA version has a lot of attention on Muslim extremists......

Well......
NCIS - fake - period. According to the premise of that show...the entire Navy and Marine Corps would be sitting at the bottom of Davy Jones Locker if it weren't for the heroic actions of NCIS.

As for jurisdiction - according to what I understand NCIS has world-wide jurisdiction, without exception. Most of that has to do with the fact (a) they are a civilian organization and (b) their charter. An NCIS investigation / agent can go where the leads take them - pending funding, etc.

It's ok to watch - but it really gets rather boring when NCIS agents on the show are the only ones that know anything and can do anything - especially when an ex-Marine supposedly knows more about a ship than the C.O. does.

PO1 Larry Castle You're right, it's just a show and I like Mark Harmon. As for NCIS - in my book the jury is still out. They're great when it comes to brow beating sailors though. I have to give them a "meh" grade - mostly cuz the only times I ever saw them get out of their rack was when the value of anything lost or stolen was greater than $100k. If it wasn't that high in value - they had to have special dispensation to even turn over and fart - even then they'd complain cuz someone turned down the a/c too low (which I know absolutely NOTHING about!, in spite of the fact I had the keys to the stateroom, the only guy onboard that had enough knowledge to remove the solenoid valve guts that would stop the flow of chill water and the only opportunity to do so - pure circumstantial evidence). We won't discuss short-sheeting or rubbing insulation on interior equipment and stuff in their lockers (that they used common locks on) .... nooooo comment.

Is the TV Show "NCIS" a good portrayal of the service and its duties?

MAJ Robert (Bob) Petrarca a lot of dramatic license? NOOOOOO

I would say that not even close, but they probably have computers and screens and a director. I mean really in NCIS to be more truthful they should have each agent on Rally Point before they get a call....

My wife and I watch the show. She watches religiously. I enjoy it if only the show hasn't taken the plunge into sex for the sake of ratings the same way that CSI did once the science wasn't good enough for viewers anymore.

Yeah, the "every female NCIS agent is hot" thing is far from realistic, not to mention LTC Mann - CID hotness, Abby, scientific Goth hotness, Jamie Lee Curtis - still and always hot...

No...I have a friend who is an agent and her dad used to be the director of NCIS. She said she loves that show, but is nothing like real life. Side note: Her dad made an appearance in NCIS: Los Angeles.

Well to be fair, the show NCIS spins off from (JAG) wasn't all that realistic either, but was still pretty darn entertaining. Plus it's free advertising.

LTC Paul Labrador Sir , don't get me wrong, I love NCIS and JAG wasn't bad either. Based on what Im told...the real agents don't get in that many gun fights and its mainly paper work. If the show was nothing but paper work, Im sure it wouldn't be worth watching.

It's good entertainment but like almost all other shows and movies made by Hollywood it gives a false impression to the public about military life and service. Much of the public has misconceptions about the military, I think shows like this feeds the public fantasy. Perhaps this is why some of our elected leaders share those fantasies about life in the military.

Great show but it has no resemblance to what the NCIS (or Army CID or Air Force OSI) does. They take a lot of "literary license" in depicting the authority, jurisdiction and duties of NCIS agents. Very similar to the series "JAG"... Everybody knows that military lawyers don't do 95% of the stuff depicted in that series.

If the way they are depicted in those series' are true, we could just send the Navy JAG and NCIS over to Afghanistan and they would decimate ISIS/ISIL in about 60 minutes.

Great entertainment, but far from reality.

Am watching Season 12 premier. Who but Leroy Jethro Gibbs could remain cool as a cucumber as a Seahawk gets hit by a SAM/AAM. He sits there calm and collective, like, "yeah this happens all the time" Too damn funny!!!

Good entertainment but not realistic. Too much off the reservation and out of jurisdiction issues. But, I do like both NCIS's.

How about Jack Reacher? I was laughing so hard knowing that a MP Officer was being portrayed as a crack investigator.
