I'm currently an active duty 12M stationed at JBLM, I would start trying to get into that MOS as soon as possible, I've been trying to PCS to another unit on the east coast and there are quite a few vacancies. The units here at JBLM have had quite a bit of trouble keeping the soldiers that have come straight from the school house (Good Fellow), a few of them simply can't do the job or get kick out for failing a UA.
Which all in all sounds like good news for you.

We have two firefighting units on north fort of JBLM, an engineering detachment and an ordinance unit.

Its one of the hardest army jobs to get. Especially active duty. Best bet would be to get the job go guard or reserves. Theres only a total of 200 some active duty firefighters

That could be it to. There are also recruiters that don't know about it. I was the first one my recruiter had seen in 7 years. And i had to wait about 6 months to swear in till a slot opened.

PFC (Join to see) - Some states have eliminated 12M and reclassed those soldiers. I know that was the case for West Virginia about a year ago. But I know several states don't have 12M at all.

PFC (Join to see) - Yeah I had folks from Ohio in my AIT but I forget if they were Guard or Reserve though.

I was a 51m which switched to 21m now 12m I got my position as an open contract in 1999 it's hard to get this as active duty . I just hit the MOS lottery the school at Goodfellow is pretty awesome. The training unlike any other in 60+ days you learn what most Firefighters don't learn in 2 years at a dept gl trying to active duty .
