Is there any truth to the rumor that the Sniper tab is going to be authorized for wear in 2018?

Well the "C" Device and "R" Device have been approved, we have an Expert Action Badge (Name Pending) coming, there's rumors about a Master Infantry Badge and a Master Medic Badge. Jungle School is apparently coming back and rumors about the Jungle Tab/Patch so why not the Sniper Tab?
I don't think it should be worn in the field.

Expert action badge?! Wtf is that stupid shit?! There can't be a master infantry and master medic badge if there's already an expert badge for both of those. I don't think it gets much more proficient than expert. And my thoughts on the jungle tab: if you want that shit then just graduate ranger school.

SPC Tommy Faircloth - The Expert Action Badge is the regular Soldier equivalent to the Expert Infantry Badge or the Expert Field Medic Badge. Have to go through a bunch of tests/trials and if you succeed you get the badge. As for the concept of the Master Infantry Badge & Master Medic Badge, it was proposed that if you were awarded the EIB & CIB / EFMB & CMB that you would instead wear a master badge instead of the Combat badge. I provided some artist concepts of the proposed MIB and the EAB of which the design and name for the EAB is still up in the air apparently. The EAB is happening and the MIB/MMB are still being tossed around.

SPC Tommy Faircloth - Apparently as of 2014 if you complete training at the Jungle Operations Training Center (JOTC) and are assigned to USARPAC you can wear the Jungle Expert Tab. This wasn't anything new as prior to the closing of JOTC in 1999 before it's reopening in 2014, Soldiers who completed the course were awarded the Tab. Once you are no longer a part of USARPAC you can't wear it though.

SPC Tommy Faircloth - There is also an Arctic Tab for those that complete the Cold Weather Orientation Course (CWOC) or the Cold Weather Leadership Course (CWLC) in Alaska at the Northern Warfare Training Center if you are assigned to USARAK.

Would you really want to be wearing this badge? Might be a target reference point!

Can't verify how accurate this article is, but discusses the permanent, unit, obsolete, and unofficial tabs. http://popularmilitary.com/didnt-know-coveted-army-tabs/

I read an article earlier this year that said the Sniper Tab would NOT be authorized. I don't know how official that article was or if anything has changed since though. It's weird that there isn't some sort of identification for graduates of sniper school. A tab or a badge or something.

My guess is that Snipers are not supposed to be identified but I think it would be fine if they wore the Tab in garrison just not in the field.

Yeah the little tab is going to identify the sniper in the field, not the long rifle, guile suit super squared away attitude ....

Totally. On the occasions I had to tote the M24 or M21 around in daylight, I tried to downplay that rifle and blend in with the Joes around me. I'd sort of hang my arm over the scope. I certainly wouldn't want the word "SNIPER" spelled out on my uniform.
And in garrison, who cares? I don't need to wave my genitalia around and impress everyone. Showing off is for amateurs and counter to our ethos. We're supposed to be. QUIET Professionals.

Authorized or not, even if I was a sniper you wouldn't catch me wearing a sign...

When I was on active duty there was a SSG in the other scout platoon that wore a sniper tab.. when did it become unauthorized?

"As much as we would like the “SNIPER” Tab to be an authorized tab (some units authorize to be sewn inside of Sniper’s boonie caps) for completing specific marksmanship courses, it (sadly) just isn’t the case. Originally meant for troops who graduated from the US Army Sniper school, the unofficial patch was later watered down during the Global War on Terror to signify graduates of Sniper School, the Special Operations Target Interdiction Course (SOTIC) and various advanced long-range marksman courses (due to the difficulty in getting soldiers sent to the actual US Army Sniper School amid countless back-to-back deployments and unit budget woes. Some units might even allow them for members of Sniper Platoons who haven’t gone to a marksman school at all, though this is generally a taboo practice."

Never been authorized by "Big Army"...but as with everything, there's some things that certain units get away with.
