Does anyone know if there is a limit or statute of limitations on upgrading your discharge? I was unaware I could do this until recently and it's been, well, since 1995 since I was outed from the Navy- if I were still serving which I really wanted to, this would have been my 22nd year! My DD-214 states "General Under Honorable Conditions" as my discharge. Ever since I've tried applying for benefits, VA loan or money for school I keep getting the run around. I know I put money toward the G.I. Bill (money taken out of my check every month for a year) and believe I should get this back no matter what but I keep getting the run around on that too! I actually have an outstanding student loan to pay off! My local VA here in Davenport, IA hasn't done much to help me and said it's too late- I just don't buy it! Anyone here in RallyPoint know what I can do to get things rolling or am I just screwed? Thanks! :D

1. Obtain a copy of DD Form 293, "Application for the Review of Discharge or Dismissal from the Armed Forces of the United States."
2. Complete personal information in Section 1.
3. If you are making the application on behalf of another individual, complete Section 2.
4. Indicate the action you wish the board to accomplish in Section 3.
5. In section 4, indicate whether you wish to appear before the board in Washington D.C., wait for a traveling board, or have a records only review.
6. If another person is representing you, complete section 5.
7. Complete Section 6 if you elect not to be represented by counsel.
8. List supporting documentation in Section 7.
9. In Section 8, tell the board exactly why they should consider upgrading your discharge.
10. Sign and Date the Form in Section 9.
11. Mail the completed form to the address listed on the reverse side of the DD Form 293.

Hope this helps!

Is there a website I can get this from or do I have to submit a request in writing?

Since it's been longer than 15 years, I had to print and fill out neatly form DD-149. I've mailed it in early today and know it'll be a long wait as I've learned from reading complaints online that these never get expedited. Crossing fingers! I have an attorney friend who will be doing Pro-Bono if needed, so hopefully it won't come to that.

SA (Join to see) First of all you have benefits - just not everything. You can get VA healthcare for instance. May I suggest you contact one of your local Veteran Service Organizations (VSO) and speak with one of their Service Officers. If you need assistance selecting one feel free to contact me here on RP or directly:

While I might not be able to directly assist you, I can damned well find you someone who can!

Hang in there....

Is this different from the Veteran's Affairs office? That's where I originally tried to get help through but was disappointed in the lack of info at the time :/

Hey get with me on that- my e-mail is dfmooney1974@gmail . com. My area that I live in is the Quad Cities Metro area and I live in Davenport, IA. I'm very much interested in learning more about the VSO and if there's a local chapter here in my town! Well, got to hit the rack. It's my bedtime believe it or not LOL!

SA David Mooney the American Legion and I believe the VFW also have service officers that assist veterans with service related items, that is another avenue for assistance.
