Les
I took a look at my December LES and had a line that read:

REFUND MEDICARE -.02

Yep... you seen that right... I was "refunded" -.02.

In this case, they took my two cents under the guise of calling it a refund....

"I want my two dollars!!!"

OH! I missed the "negative" part! Go straight to finance and demand to speak with the Chief! This is egregious!

On my LES, what I thought was interesting was the .50 they deduct for the Armed Forces Retirement Home. At .50 an enlisted Soldier, over my 20 year career just the Army Soldiers alone contributed about $65,000,000. There should some retirements with hallways paved in gold around here somewhere for the enlisted retirees.

Mine has been messed up a couple times over my career so far but the funniest thing I've seen happened to someone else. I had an E-3 tell me he needed to go talk with the finance personnel because he was sure he had been paid too much. After they looked him up there was an awkward silence and they said "You're not retired are you?" They soon discovered that he had the same first and last name as an E-9 that had recently retired and their pay got mixed up. So an active duty E-3 started receiving a retired E-9's paycheck. It seems like SSNs would have prevented something like this but I guess anything is possible.

It happens more often than you think. Financial algorithms are used to forecast how much should be withheld from our checks but as laws change, the algorithms need adjustment. DFAS tried to keep the variances low as to have minimal impact to the individual service member. But accounting is all about finding every penny, so if we are owed .02 extra, by golly we are gonna recieve it!

I did a 4 day tour out of the Reserves, and got 4 days pay, but 6 days BAS and BAQ. I reported it and my next check had an additional payment of 2 days BAS/BAQ, for a total of 4 days that I was not supposed to get.
This time I sent a detailed explanation of what happened, and the final instruction to deduct 4 days BAS/BAQ paid in error. That worked.

I've had that a bunch of times. Most recently they gave me an advance (that I didn't take) of about $200 and a debt payment of $200 all on the same LES. I submitted an inquiry because I really wanted to know what advance and debt (though the advance suggested it) came from. The response was I got paid what I should lve so why was I worried.
