I have experience sitting on a board(s), and they are generally not received well... They actually call more attention to you... when that is likely not your desire. But, if there is a need, then go for it. Short, sweet, and to the point.

That definitely used to be the case sir, but the new 2017 milpr message definitively suggest writing one now. "a letter shows you have taken a vested interest in your career. Be formal, keep it to no more than 1 page, preferably shorter, and do not include documents in your IPERMS folder. Highlight positive information not otherwise reflected in your board file. Under no circumstances will derogatory information about another soldier or unit be added.
