I was very young and not smart when I first joined. So much I could tell myself. Probably the big thing would be to do the college thing sooner in my career and actually go.

Don't marry someone who's slightly crazy just because she is solid stone beautiful.

SPC Michael Terrell - Don't know about that. Slightly crazy and convinced they are normal and everyone else isn't is tough to live with.

Man up, real quickly! Get with the program. Even if you don't like there [I didn't], do your best. Make lasting friendships, as some will stay with you for life. If you rise in the ranks, don't forget where you came from, and act with respect and honor always. Take on challenges, even if you think you will fail.

I would advise my younger self to join the reserves upon the termination of that first enlistment as I attended college on the Korean War GI Bill. I would also advise my young self to chose ROTC in college since I obtained a direct commission. In all, I threw away about 6 years of reserve time that would have paid me good money throughout my life.

There was only one reserve unit for my MOS, and it was several thousand miles away.

I would tell myself to stay in as long as I could to get the retirement benefits, the health benefits while not the best are better than nothing so stay till retirement to have them and to save at least $50 from every check while I’m in to help set me up when I retire. But the most important thing I would tell myself is have fun and take advantage of the education opportunities!
