I was drafted in January of 71, the day after we arrived at Ft Dix we had written teats. Four of use were asked if we wanted to go to officers candidate school we asked what does it entail. We were told it’s three months of training and you have to reup for a year. We said no, I did this without thinking. I should have reconsidered it.

Don't wear that T-shirt with a picture of the Beatles on it under my dress whites at my first command inspection when I was a Seaman Apprentice.

But seriously, I wouldn't change a thing. If I did, I may not be with my wife which means we wouldn't have had our kids and that would also mean I wouldn't have my dogs. So I'll pass on changing anything from my past.

Given the opoy to travel back to 1982, when I crashed and burned, I would give the following advice.
Kid, life brings many bad times in our lives. You have a mission, and for you to fulfill that mission, you need to lean on God. Keep God in your life, and when questions arise, ask for his help.
Your goal is for you to use your time in the service to further yourself, to become a Doctor, so don't let the shit storms to stop you.
Once your goals are met, will be in time for you to step up. Pay close attention to the future leaders, you will have some that are out to destroy this great nation, just to pad their pocket books.
Take a leadership role, starting in town, and build to the National Stage, the demise of this country is squarely on the Soldiers, the Patriots like you.

I tried to drown my military experience for 6 years. I was drunk at 3PM one day when I had a talk with God. I said." I'm tried and tired of being tired. I know you're up there somewhere. If there is a life to be lived; I'm ready. If you tell me to jump. I'll start jumping until you say stop. ...I was instantly sober. I stopped my truck and ate a greasy sausage sub and didn't get sick. I've been sober for 46 years. I am now a solder in God's army. This time I will win the fight.

SPC Matt Ovaska you looked at the bottom of the bottle, I on the other looked to the greatest possible chance of death.
I sometimes wonder if booze or drugs would have been better than a Death wish.

My recommended prayer to God. I use it all the time and for years, I have found this prayer working exceedingly well. This prayer is easy to remember because it's only one word. HELP

Use the college benefits more while active duty before retirement.
I could've had probably 2 or 3 BS degrees before retiring.

Keep up the great work. It works out for the best in the end. Be careful of whom you trust, ask what is in the mail bag.
