Embrace the uncertainty of life in general and military life in particular. Take a moment to see the good in every situation; be thankful for those moments, and never burn all your bridges.

Don't worry about getting a car or motorcycle or chasing women. Focus, focus, focus on investing in yourself.

MCPO Daniel Meffen - valid point. I've been out since 1999 (enlisted in 1978) so hopefully things have changed. I started out as a non-designated FN working on the waterfront in PR (Rosey Roads) working towards being an electric's mate. My SC did everything he could to discourage me or make it difficult to get my designation, so I made an early decision to change to a non-designated SN. From there I went back to my forte....administration. Didn't find that issue as prevalent in that field, but I can't say it wasn't non-existent. What a great story you share!! Thanks Shipmate.

PO1 BrendaLee Lennick - I hope you stayed in the reserves and at least got some retirement! Like every thing there are good and bad people in leadership positions. I remembered the bad, so I would never turn out like that, and always tried to help those that really wanted/needed help. Women in the Navy was not new I was on AS 36 when they came aboard, caused a lot of changes, and then again I had them in Main Propulsion on CV/AVT 59, some were very good, some wre not, it depends on the person, especially in a main space on a CV. most pulled thier load!

MCPO Daniel Meffen - I retired with 22 yrs total. 2 years ANG and 20 USN. I don't regret a moment of it and am enjoying full retirement as we speak. I agree 1000% on your comments. As the question was put tho, I was very naive about women's roles and acceptance going in, so it would be a fair warning to my earlier self ;) Thank you for being one of the good leaders!

PO1 BrendaLee Lennick - Good for you, I am glad to her that. Things are constantl changing, in todays Navy, I would never be a MCPO!
