As mentioned in a response to last week's question, I had the opportunity to attend East Carolina University with an ROTC Scholarship but I turned it down and later enlisted in the USAF This was after I was not selected to attend the AF Academy. Since then I have often wondered what it would have been like to go back and accept the offer and hopefully graduate with a rank of 2LT in the USAF. It really does make one wonder. I cannot complain though as my life has been rewarding. Things in my life today would most likely not have been the way they turned out to be. It could have been for the better or it could have been for the not so good. I wonder!

The IBM360/370 mainframes were common when I served. Entire multi story buildings were built to house them.

Amen, brother!
I was at San Jose State in 1964-69 and had the "opportunity" to see what 18-19 yr olds looked like from the perspective of four years of #USAF

I refer to the same years as 5 years of wasting my Dad's money; did go back under Bootstrap and finished my degree while on active duty. Sounds like similar feelings.

Do not get upset or even frustrated at things that are outside of your control.

To change my mind when I refused to listen to my DI's insistence I go to OCS in Quantico. At that time the war in Viet Nam was going into full mode and I figured a 2LT would last less than a week, so I backed out. I should have gone and become an officer.

You probably would have lasted 2 weeks. Your family would have gotten the form letter to inform them of your heroism. They would never know that your death most likely resulted from friendly fire due to your training at West Point or Quantico. They created 90 day wonders, that would have caused death and destruction to those of us trying to fight and stay alive. Some of them quickly realized that an adjustment to the unwritten rules would hopefully keep their team effective in a combat zone, became team players, and returned home with captain bars. My captain once told me, "If someone try's to come in my gate, I want to hear 2 shots. The M-14 warning shot and the one that kills him. Which one you shoot first, is up to you."
I'm glad you're back. NCO's run the military; not CO's
