Studying mental illness, PTSD, and tramatic brain injuries can be tedious, but there are a couple of books written by people who have suffered from these conditions that are worth considering. One book which gives readers a peek into the way a person with an altered mental state thinks is Red Helmsy's book The Lemon Dance. From Castro and Kennedy, to secret missions and air piracy, it just keeps going and the whole time you get a view of how a person who has suffered a tramatic brain injury thinks. (Helmsy is the only person in history to have been found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity of air piracy.) Is he telling the truth about being in the Special Forces or is it all in his head?

While I don't know the validity of the claim in the book, I do know the way PTSD and TBI affects our service members - and their families. We see it week in and week out at Project Sanctuary retreats.
The good news is that we have demonstrated results in our methods to help those who have had to deal with how this has affected their lives.
