Microsoft to replace Internet Explorer with new, streamlined browser

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/microsoft-to-replace-internet-explorer-with-new-streamlined-browser-9949448.html

Microsoft is developing a new, streamlined web browser that will replace Internet Explorer, according to reports, in an apparent attempt to move towards other popular browsers like Chrome and Firefox.

The new app could also help Microsoft distance itself from users’ bad memories of old versions of IE. In the past the company has considered changing the name to separate the current browser from “negative perceptions that no long reflect reality”, according to developers.

The browser, codenamed Spartan, is set to be shown off on January 21st when Microsoft demonstrates its new Windows 10 operating system, according to people close to the company. But it might not be ready for release when the early version of the software launches the same month.

EDITORIAL COMMENT:- Fortunately I don't have to worry about the glitches and flaws when Microsoft introduces its imitation of Firefox since I'm already using Firefox.

Everybody! Stop for a second and hear what CW3 Michael Danberry has to say about this. At least I wonder what would all of this mean. So far I had to downgrade my IE so I can do some ALC DL. I chose not to upgrade cause ALMS is not playing well. Another thing: I had to use Remote Access Portal to print my DD Form 2475 (SLRP) the other day. It's obvious we need to make some changes but who knows (not me).

Thanks SGT Oliver, I will not get too excited yet over this news. The Windows 10 preview I have still has IE 11. And MS is still planning on leaving IE 11 in the OS for backwards compatibility.

As long as the DOD is seamless and problem free with adjusting to the new browser (not to mention the latest Windows) I think everything will be fine!

I can't believe I typed that with a straight face.

This will not affect me because in my job sadly I still have to make sure our agency web site still renders in Internet Explorer properly even though it is the bane of a web developer's exististence!
I HATE IE!! Down with IE!

PV2 (Join to see) It's even harder these days because you also have to code for portable devices. The m.xxx.xxx websites are often very different than the conventional ones, and there are a whole ton of browsers out there. If you're really good, you also have to worry about Linux, other UNIX versions and MAC OS, all of which render differently.

Being a webmaster is tough business these days, if you have to write your own HTML/IP v5 websites... And don't get started on JAVA and all the other plugins...

Another dumb move Microsoft will regret. Internet Explorer (IE) is far from perfect, but it's the browser most users are accustomed too. Eliminating and replacing it will divide its fan base and intimidate many of its users. They should've learn this from the windows 8 launch, which I personally know many users refuse to use.
Microsoft managed to get their browser (IE) on just about every Windows machine in the world. Its "household". It's like Wal-Mart in the computer world; Would they even consider changing the name with the footprint they have? It's stupid!

I think windows 10 will be a great improvement, along with this new browser. I switched to Mac just before windows 8 came out. My wife has a windows 8 laptop and I absolutely hate it ,I have over 20 years experience with pc's. I do occasionally fire up a windows 10 virtual machine and I love it.

its already getting better, I put 16gig of ram in , had 4 gig. I am also replacing the sh*tty wireless card, lately it has not been connecting to wireless router, wont draw ip. If I do something then it connects, but drops a couple hours later its gotten worse over the last few months. Hopefully the new wireless card of a different brand will fix it.

I know we are getting a little off topic, but I am hoping they do an update to windows media center, or at least make the metro interface more remote friendly. I have a home theater pc using windows 7 media center, I think it works great for my needs just kinda of long in tooth, I even have a HD tv tuner so I can get my digital content however it is windows only. I do have window 8 ssd on stand by if the hard drive craps out, I feel I am on borrowed time since the harddrive was bought in 2008

I'll try it when I switch to Windows 10 but I'll probably end up sticking with Chrome. Yeah I have Firefox (that's what I'm on right now in fact) but for whatever reason Firefox doesn't play well with Windows 8.1. It causes a lot of memory leakage and randomly freezes. Only on 8.1 though!
