http://www.militarycac.com. This site has an answer for just about every problem anyone has ever run into regarding the use of a CAC card and email at home. If it doesn't have a solution for your problem, then the solution probably doesn't exist.

Hi, I'm a day late reading this thread and the OP may have already solved the problem. If not, you will need to download and install the OWA S/MIME application in order to process encrypted OWA emails. For those who are having trouble finding the application I have downloaded it and uploaded it to my website. It has been scanned with both McAfee and Symantec Anti-Virus software and is digitally signed by Microsoft. If you have any issues with the download please let me know and I'll get it to you. Best regards - Doug Moxley

Encrypted emails also only open on gov't secure lines.. If you're at home trying to access this through your Internet browser it doesn't work unless you download the tools fore mentioned.

My computer won't open encrypted emails on AKO. How do I get it to open?

Outlook Web Application (OWA) can only use the S/MIME controls to view encrypted emails if you are using Internet Explorer. Since OWA is proprietary Microsoft technology they limit it.

I'm a addition duty career counselor for my company. I get emailed the info that I need before drill, so I have some time to plan and organize. However, it does no good, as I can never read the email on my personal computer. If I had any idea, I'd help you! It's crossed my mind a few times to throw this question on RP and see if I could get a solution myself.

Maj (Join to see) - I have and instead of an error telling me the S/Mime control isn't installed, I get a couple of other different errors, I don't recall off the top of my head, but I still can't read the email.

SSgt (Join to see) - well at least we've got 1 problem solved. So one of the common errors can probably be solved by double clicking the email to open it in another window.

One of the errors I had when trying this was that when they created my CAC they didn't establish "authoritative email certificates". I couldn't read encrypted emails at home until that was fixed by Personnel.

Maj (Join to see) - I have opened in a new window, and the allows me to read non encrypted emails that won't show, but I've had no success with encrypted.

SSgt (Join to see) - hmm. You might have to go to your CAC office and have them reissue your certs because there might be an error like what happened to me.

Verify that you have the proper certificates installed. I assume that because you are on a personal computer tou are also using OWA, it sometime has issues with encrypted emails, most likely it is the certs though
