My niece wants to join the Air Force. MOS recommendations?

The funny thing about the Air Force is you can only chose from what MOS she qualify for. Did she take the ASVAB yet? that is the only way you can know what MOS she qualifies for. And even then you don't get the MOS you choose it is an open contract. Only the Army offers guaranteed contracts.

This is false, the Marine Corps can and does sign members of the DEP to occupational fields prior to shipping to recruit training.

Yes a phantom contract until ship day comes for booth camp their MOS is changed to the needs of the Marines. Yeah seen it many times at the MEPS

Again this is false, not sure what MEPS you seen that at. I was the Senior MEPS liaison from 2007-2010. They have a binding contract that can not be changed by the MEPS without them signing something different. How often were you hanging out in the Marine Liaisons office to see this?

SSG Mills, the Air Force has offered guaranteed jobs since I joined in '98. As MSgt Keller said, it's a binding contract between the AF and the enlistee. There are a few conditions, but it as long as the trainee doesn't get injured or washed back in Basic and miss their training date, AFSC (what you would call an MOS) is guaranteed.
You are correct though in that she would have to qualify for the AFSC based on her ASVAB scores and a few other factors.

1) What interests her?
2) Are her interests related to a college major? - whether or not she has attended yet.
3) How strongly does the Air Force Specialty Code (Thanks TSgt Kevin Buccola for the translation) tie to a civilian career/skillset?
My kids are still young but this is what I would look at to get the best bang for your service bucks.

How is she with languages? That's one skill that can always be used both in the civilian world and in the service...! I'll have to think about it...

I agree with MSgt Keller picking the appropriate job is extremely important. As a veteran of both the Army and Air Force my advice would be to pick something that she enjoys as well as something that is marketable. I remember having a hard time finding a job when I left the Army. I would not wish that on anyone leaving the service to experience.
