NCOs & Leaders: I'm getting ready to deploy to Qatar with an NG Infantry unit. As a Squad Leader, what should I be on the lookout for?

With this mission my primary concern is Joes being Joes and getting into trouble. Lots of down time, limited movement off base, "defensive posture", spells bored Joes causing trouble.

Keep an eye out for booze packages. Friends and family are quite creative. I've intercepted quite a few in my days as a PSG.

I recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan on a 300mx300m FOB in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Constant defensive posture. However, as only a PFC I had the opportunity to actually lead my own advise and assist missions "outside the wire" for a minute. Best thing I found that helped my men and advisors from complaining daily about the heat, or hours of missions was to put into perspective the importance of the small moving parts of a mission. The military's main mission in the Middle East for example as of now can ONLY be made possible by doing those "boring" and "totally useless" missions I seemed to lead. Yet some of the most important intel regarding VBIEDs, s-vests and taliban movements and reconnaissance around our FOB was gathered at on my mission set because of how closely we worked with local nationals and ANA. Perspective and mindset in my opinion is the most important. If your men understand this, then they will develop the basic soldering skills that keep them from becoming complacent.

Out of curiosity what does one do in Qatar. I know they sent guys who re-upped there for a few days for some extra R&R but what do stationed troops do there?

Keep them from getting bored. I just got back from Qatar as deployments go it’s super boring and not an ideal deployment for Infantry. Keep your joes training and doing college courses or corespondent courses. We did EIB training as well. The Top Off and Oasis serve alcohol so that is a hot spot for trouble and SHARP complaints if you’re not careful. Brace yourself for the longest most boring 9 months of your life.
