The Navy announced the new CMDCS rating today, and so far the reaction I've seen in other social media and directly from other Sailors ranges from cynical to outright opposition. I'm curious what the Rally Point community has to say

Hell, I don't even agree with the CMDCM rating. Makes things more political than they have to be. I'm a deck plate Chief. That's where we need to be, not kissing an Admirals ass be. We are paid/ made to take the right position, not the one popular at the minute.

INITIATED AND PROUD!

CPO Joseph Grant Chief, I'm a little unclear as to why being a CMDCM or CMDCS would mean being unable to take the right position. My dad was a CMDCM, and I remember several times when he had to lock horns with the chain of command in order to take care of the enlisted sailors on the ship.

SN Michael Gielczyk, and you see some who just fill the billet. Making up new ratings is not the answer to solve problems. I am sure there are plenty of old Chefs from back in the day who could care less about the rate as much as they cared about taking care of the sailors under them.

Exactly, once you are a Chief you are responsible not only for your own rate but all the Sailors, mentoring junior and sometimes mid-grade officers and at the end of the day, the Navy.

I don't agree with the CMDCM program because I've seen too many that are more interested in advancing in leadership positions than in taking care of their Sailors.

I think it's a good idea. It takes CMDCS's out of their source rating and opens up advancement quotas. The USMC has a similar program. At the E8 level you can opt for the administration track (1Sgt, SMaj, and so on) or stay on the deck plates. Maybe one of our Marine brothers can expand on that.

What's wrong with leaving Command Chief/Senior Chief as a collateral duty, and how is this going to be different from Senior Chiefs who are already serving as a CMDCS? Is it that CMDCS will now be a "rating" like CMDCM?
