Of all the uniforms you wore, while serving our country, what was the strangest one?

I have had many uniforms. In 1980 it was green fatigues, then BDUs in 82/83... In AK we had wool shirts, pants, Arctic mittens, VB boots, Mukluks, the 3 piece parka, and over-whites... Vietnam era Jungle Fatigues at Ranger school... Chocolate chip DBUs... 3 color DBUs... Multi-cams... Dress Greens, Blues, ASUs, The ACU Digital... ACU - OCP... The SWAT suit was the goofiest... or Polizei?

Am I the only USAF old-timer still around who proudly wore the brown khaki uniform? It required a lot of maintenance, but when properly tailored was pretty sharp. Summer uniform-of-the-day from 1947 to early '60s.

My Dad's boot camp photo at Great Lakes in 1940 had the later version of the flat hat.

LtCol Mac McCarty - I don't remember having one, but they were eliminated Apr 1, 1963, five years after I enlisted.

LtCol Mac McCarty
MCPO Roger Collins - I doubt that he ever wore it after Recruit Training. He reported to USNH, Balboa for Hospital Corps School circa September 1940 and then reported to the Hospital embarked in USS Relief (AH-1). He made PhM3c before March 1941, PhM 2 in May, PhM 1 in September 1941 and CPhM right after Pearl Harbor. He was Leading Chief in one of the Collecting and Clearing Companies and enjoyed beach vacations at Kwajalien, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Pelelieu. When Relief returned to the States in November 1944, he had more time on the ship than any other officer or man in eithe the Hospital or the Ship's company--50 months at sea. Hus last duty station was as Leading Chief in the Pharmacy at USNH, Yosemite Valley, CA. Because he had enlisted on 2 July 1940 for six, as all the other wartime enlistments ended with the point system, he remained on active duty and was discharged on 1 July 1946. I may be a little prejudiced, but Dad helped Admiral Nimitz win the war in the Pacific. He died at age 47 in June 1963. I often wonder what conversations we might have had after I came home from RVN in December 1969.

I remember finding something in 670-1 once about half capes for the ASUs. Never could find pictures of it but apparently it exists.

I know two people who have rocked the cape....one is a lawyer, wearing it because he can, not because he should.

If you want the weirdest uniform, it would have to be of necessity from the twisted imagination of the pompous and vainglorious Herman Goering, who designed his own uniforms: http://bbs.boy-toy.net/attachments/month_1107/ [login to see] 67aa21f43a40169.jpg .

I joined for the dress greens I still think to this day they are sexy as hell but the stupidest ones have been the ACU pattern ... completely useless

SGT (Join to see) Yes... the OCP pattern ACU was a good idea in concept, but not in practice.

Col Charles Williams Surely you mean the UCP pattern ACU. OCP is very effective, and as a Marine, feel that we should all cross over to it

The strangest uniform I wore was also the most practical. From 1977 to 1980, the military was involved with cleaning radioactive debris on Enewetak Atoll, site of 43 nuclear detonations from 1948 to 1958. The Army issued everyone jungle fatigues with the pants cut off just above the knees and the sleeves cut off above the elbow. Most wore the shorts but either green tee shirts or no shirt at all. This was because of the tropical environment with the average temperature around 100 degrees.

SP5 Elden Morris Sounds cool, literally, but not really a radioactive debris suit?

It seldom got above 85 to 90 degrees while I was in the RMI. Enewetak was probably still "hot". Eek.
