I recently got sent to school (as a reservist) which lasted for 42 days. It's my understanding that full BAH is earned when active for 30 days or more, anything less and you get BAH Type II.

My school was two 21 day phases, back to back. This was a continuous 42 day course without days off.

I was paid BAH Type II and was explained by my unit that that's how the Army saves $$, essentially cheating a soldier out of benefits. My house payment didn't change so why would I not get paid enough to cover it? I'm not having any luck finding a reg on it. If anyone knows where it is I would greatly appreciate it.

A couple of things has to have happened, do you have a copy of your rental/mortgage in finance system. If not this would be the primary reason. If you are married is all the information in finance? If you are a single soldier with no information in the system you got what your getting. I fought for years with the Guard over this, got the run around from hell. Finally I got a hold of someone who could set it straight. To me BAH type II for a single soldier should be banished from the face of the earth, it is IMHO the grossest form of discrimination I have ever seen in uniform. As it takes a whole class of service members and states your living arrangements mean nothing to us, but married service members get the full authorization. The onus is on you to get the info in the system, don't expect people to know what your talking about, as most people are ignorant on this, but you are allowed to get BAH figured on where you live, when you are on your 2 weeks, or school, or activation. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

All my information is up to date showing I have a dependent (wife) so that's not the issue. I haven't been asked for a mortgage since I deployed to Iraq in '03 as it's supposed to be a flat rate regardless of rent/own because BAH is based on rent rates in the area. I agree with you completely on BAH Type II because we all have bills to pay and they don't change when we mobilize.

Sounds like a query to unit S1 or DFAS is in order.

How were your orders cut? Two sets for 21 days each?

BAH has nothing to do with your house payment, it is based on your zip code, dependency status, and yes, your orders. IADT (the orders you get for first going to basic) only cover type II BAH and you have to show that you are paying rent or have dependents. I understand this is probably not the case for you. I would agree that you just had a gap in orders. Might still be able to fight it.

SSG(P) Wallen; My experience is with U.S. Coast Guard Regs regarding your situation... I suggest you pay a visit to your Units Pay & Personnel Section's Clerks, It's been my experience that there's usually one or two of those folks that specialize in the ins and outs of Reserve pay & allowances for pay during (ADT) Active Duty for Training or (TAD) Temporary Additional Duty, for Schools & various kinds of Specialty Training, etc.

I was Administrative NCO for my last couple of Units and if you were in the U.S. Coast Guard I'd refer you to the Pay and Personnel Procedure Manual & possibly the Housing Manual, to start with see what you can find regarding, Reserve Pay and allowances for ADT or TAD for Training.

I'm sure the Army has similar manuals, that you're way more familiar with than I or as an E-6, at least you should be!

Thank you for the advice. Sadly I'm too old to jump to the CG unless I drop a commissioning packet...

Did you have a break maybe a day or two between the orders. Also you can apply for FSA family separation allowance seen that you were away for 42 days. reach out to me at [login to see]

Yes. Your unit screwed you. ADTS, same fund code, two sets of orders. They could have cut just one. I would talk to my leadership and see about getting that fixed. If not, IG is an option.

Depends on the type and duration of orders. Depending on the type of school, they should have used the appropriate funds to cut one order. I suspect that they used AT and then ADT orders (2 sets > 30 days).

I called DFAS and they told me to contact my pay office and was told they don't have any way to verify if anyone qualifies for 30% or 100%.

Sounds like it comes down to the set of orders one vs two because that dictates the days and the contractual number.

I am confused:

http://www.military.com/benefits/military-pay/basic-allowance-for-housing/non-locality-bah-payment-rates.html

Servicemembers who live in government housing and pay child support are eligible for BAH differential (table below). Servicemembers who pay child support and live on the local economy receive the "with dependent" BAH rate for their locality. Find your Basic Allowance for Housing Rates

The following table reflect the 2016 BAH Differential rates:

Grade Differential
O-10 $333.60
O-9 $333.60
O-8 $333.60
O-7 $333.60
O-6 $283.50
O-5 $274.20
O-4 $182.40
O-3 $182.10
O-2 $214.80
O-1 $232.20
O3E $190.80
O2E $228.30
O1E $267.60
W-5 $114.00
W-4 $140.40
W-3 $211.80
W-2 $223.80
W-1 $216.60
E-9 $285.90
E-8 $267.90
E-7 $310.20
E-6 $300.00
E-5 $255.30
E-4 $220.50
E-3 $180.90
E-2 $241.50
E-1 $285.90

MAJ Ken Landgren - We don't get BAH for regular battle assemblies but we do when put on orders. As an example I was placed on 2 day orders and received BAH Type II last year. It wasn't much, but every bit helps.
