I am PCSing to Fort Bliss and would like to know if the housing on post is better than living off post? Me and my wife are newly Weds moving from Hawaii and The housing on Hawaii was nothing short of livable. But we are unaware of the living situation in the Ft Bliss and El Paso area.

If you are looking for proximity, then yes, on-post is your best bet. On-post housing here is nice and most of it is new. The nicer off-post housing is either on the far east side or far west side which can be 20-30min drives depending on traffic. NE side is starting to grow, but doesn't have as much services and convenient shopping. I would not look for anythin immediatley off post.

Glad to help. Feel free to ping me if you have any other questions.

BTW the post inprocessing process is a pain in the ass here. Be prepared for 10 days of blah.....

In processing was a pain as LTC Labrador said. But lots of down time too. I took it as an easy vacation.... then took another week to inprocess WBAMC. Whatever. Its slower here than Ft Bragg was, and I'm ok with that. Just don't come in all Hooah at the beginning :)

I was actually shocked how nice the new housing is on post. I told myself I would NEVER live on post. Our waitlist was quoted about 90 days, but call the housing office--- was about 15 days when I called and got it in 10 business days. They are still building. All 'historical housing' has been remodeled. Privatization of housing FTW! Seriously, I've been here 2 months and believe it is the best duty station I've been to.
We did look on the West and East sides for housing, kinda hit or miss depending. They ones we liked had no yard (i have 1 dog and kids) and ones with a yard were in need of remodel. And the drive. For peace of mind, on post works and I'm only 4-5 blocks from whereever I need to be (the Px Mall, food, my work, etc...)

Heck, I just bought a bicycle.

There are at least 2 Elementary schools on post-- main post and East Bliss. There is a middle school/highschool (i think?) directly off the Jeb Stuart gate on main post. By that I mean kids walk from housing, into a school zone that starts 500 yards from the gate, go out the gate and into the school. As I don't do much on East Bliss, I'm not sure of other options.
As for safety, El Paso has been rated #1 in the nation 3 or 4 years now for safety (reduced crimes etc) for a city its size. The schools I described have kids walking to them all day, every day. I'd feel comfortable.

My recommendation to you is to connect with other members here on RallyPoint via the advance tab in the upper right. They will be able to best answer your questions.
