It's definitely true that different units have different personalities. This can be really important to people in the Reserve components, as they can be in the same unit for years and years - and it's not their day job. Transferring can feel like going to a whole new military, for good or for ill. I have known several people who have gotten out (or at least jumped IRR) due to an involuntary transfer and lack of fit with the new unit.
That said, I think it is much better for this new SGT to be in a different unit from the one he grew up in to cut his NCO teeth.
Oh, and I'm so old school that when I played lvl 60 was max!

I don't know what kind of funny talk that is between you (CPT (Join to see)) and the SGT, but it is not military jargon, that's for sure, at least none that I have heard before!

I have had this happen to a number of my Soldiers. We have a detachment 2.5 hours away but they Arnt being promoted into vacancies in the unit, instead they are going to whatever unit has a vacancy within 50 miles of of their home of record.

Was this soldier given a choice of being promoted or ETSing or simply out of your unit CPT (Join to see)?
From this discussion you posted it seems he was weighing the SGLI benefits of staying in.

He was promoted and had to transfer to another unit as a condition of accepting promotion. I think part of his previous motivation for staying in service was linked to working hard for the E5/NCO milestone. When the promotion list picked him up without him putting in a packet or going in front of a board, I think the accomplishment, while deserving, lost some of its luster. We all tend to treasure that which we sweated the hardest for, I think.

SGM Mikel Dawson
CPT (Join to see) - But that's part of the military life. Things happen and you have to learn to adjust or not. I hope he takes it well and goes on to a full career.
