My wife is a current first year med student and didn't get the HPSP scholarship. The AMEDD recruiter told us about STRAP stipend if she joins Army Reserves. It would be nice to have a stipend and it looks like there is still a (smaller) loan repayment program for reserve docs. Our question - would joining reserves and accepting stipend make it difficult to go active duty as a doc after med school?

Originally our backup plan (if HPSP didn't happen) was to join as physician after med school and utilize loan repayment ($200k vs $50k for reserves). Could she take STRAP and still have the option of going active duty (with the $200k) after residency? Or would this rule that out? Kind of a confusing situation, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

They would tell her she can’t “double dip”, for example if she tries to transfer as a reservist she won’t get any sign on bonus or loan repayment incentive since she utilized STRAP. She would also need CoC approval and 368 process started (which can take up to a year+). Also I am not sure how eager USAR would be willing to lose a provider especially if they pay the school. USAR and Regular Army are different components. I would verify with her AMEDD recruiter though. Safest bet is to finish strap obligation and then go active if that isn’t an option now.

I have a friend that was a surgeon in the NG. He had no trouble finding ADSW when he wanted. If she is a surgeon in USAR, she would probably have a practice to keep up which would restrict her ADSW time.
