Coming off of my second TPU command. Will be assigned to the SOJ36 within SOCPAC out of Camp Smith, Hawaii. NOT local to the islands, so travel and lodging will be required for my annual visits.

Most IMA’s travel to their assignments. So your assignment is fairly typical in that sense.

Become best friends with your active duty counterparts, that will make your duty days much easier. If possible, try to stay away from using DTS, it’s a pain in the neck.

After reading the IMA Handbook, I was happy to learn that old fashioned travel vouchers are a staple of the process. I think we can all agree that DTS is a challenged system, but TBD as to whether the "good ol' fashion" way of doing things is as good as I remember it.

Just wondering, if switching over to IMA, would I be still receiving monthly language pay like TPU?

The IMA program is the best kept secret in the Army and Air Force. I have been doing it since 2005. The most important factor is to remember that you are in charge of your own career. The support you had before may not exist. You have to be your own expert in many areas. In the Air Force, we joke that IMA stands for I am Alone. Which in reality is not too far from the truth.

However, it’s still the best Reserve gig in the military.

Thanks Chief. Couldn't agree more. Did my first 5 in Hawaii, and will now round out my 20 there. Perfect island bookends :)
