The ones that I knew kept commission and enlisted. First one that I was aware of was Clyde Bonwell. He retired in 1966 as a COL, although he was the BN SGM. He kept up his studies, as an officer, and was promoted from CPT to COL. Not only that, but he came in as a Technical SGT* E-6 and ended as an SGM.

*Technical SGT was what is now the SFC. USAF kept Army ranks, their TSGT still an E-6.

I am aware of 1 USMC GySgt who commissioned to be a 2ndLt CommO. He already had some college under his belt and was given 4 years to complete his degree or be reverted back to enlisted with his enlisted communications peers. However he completed his college degree in time. (It was a squeaker.)

Knew several but that was a SVN RIF. They were still assigned a slot in the USAR, and had to report in person once a quarter back then. 1 was my intel NCO- SFC, and LTC USAR

I am being told although did 14 years as an officer since I resigned my commission I only get to earn a enlisted retirement. Any regs or advice would help.

SFC (Join to see) - Then your retirement pay is based on your 3 highest pay rate years so long as you achieve 20 years of active duty. I'll find a reg for you if you need more reassurance. but the High-36 (aka High 3) system doesn't care what rank you retire at. If you're more concerned about your "retired rank" title wise that's something I'd have to do more research into, but I'd start with: AR 600-8-7

https://arba.army.pentagon.mil/agdrb-overview.html Interesting article regarding getting your retired rank moved up. not sure how applicable it is to your situation.

SFC (Join to see) Here is the financial management regulation. look at pages 6-7 of the PDF for support in getting your pay figured out.: https://comptroller.defense.gov/Portals/45/documents/fmr/current/07b/Volume_07b.pdf

You'll be retired as an enlisted, but your retirement plan is still High 3, so your retirement is based off the three highest years of pay you received.

Asifmde from pay, do Officers get fifferent retirement benefits than Enlisted?

I mean, if we get high-3 regardless, what is the difference between retiring "as an enlisted" and retiring "as an officer?"

SFC Casey O'Mally from what I understand, it's just a different rank on your ID card.

It's the same thing if you don't serve enough time as an officer for retirement (I think 8 years), they warn you that you can't retire as an officer. So you get reverted back to your previous rank in your retirement papers

I knew a Major who resigned to become an e-5 to finish out the last 2 years to get to retirement...still got his High-3 as an O-4. Why?
