Retirement Points & SSD (USAR) - 80 hrs pays out as 10 ATAs = 10 IDT points. Should be 26 pts! Isn't SSD distance learning?

I am no expert on SSD and the USAR but they have made some changes with the new NCOER and policy for SSD and promotion. Because it is required in order to get promoted they award little to nothing for it because without it you are ineligible for promotion. I don't see why they would award less for your retirement points. You may need to have your unit admin contact BN and Brigade S1 for assistance and if they can't get an answer then call HRC to get you the answer. When they contact HRC they need to let them know that they are the Unit Admin. I have had them try to refer me to my unit admin when I have asked something and once I told them I was the Unit Admin they proceeded to help me get the answer I was looking for.

Since writing this, they actually clarified the policy and put it in the regs. 12 ATA cap (1 point ea) for courses on the EBDL list. If the courses exceeds the cap, then its 1 additional period (1 point) for each 8 hours.

But don't exceed you max points per aniversary year or they become useless

That's a good point. If you look at the other angle, you take 80 hours of correspondence course you will receive 26 Ret points with no pay. SSD you will received 10 Ret Points + 10 ATA pay.

Update: I'm attempting to confirm this with HRC. After reading Army Directives, Pay Messages, DODI, & Memos, the guidance says different things at different times. Could be 2 points per 8 hours or 1 point. Could be 4 hours for an ATA, could be 8 hours for an ATA. When I get a straight answer as which guidance trumps which and when, I'll post their answer here.

Great... based on my experience it is the commander's decision. So for my previous unit, they awarded a completion of an SSD with 10 ATA which also gave them 10 Ret points. Let me know what you find.

UPDATE TO THIS: HRC basically yelled at me for even asking the question and told me to ask my Unit Admin - whose response was "Idk, its hard-coded in the system." So after not getting an answer, the old regulations were changed and the new ones just became effective on April 15th: "Eight-hour rule. Approved electronic-based distributed learning (EBDL) courses will be awarded to members of the SELRES (TPU). Subject to available funding, and as pre-approved, Soldiers may earn one retirement point and be paid for one IDT for every 8 hours of distance learning completed." AR 140-185 (2-4.b.5.), 15 Mar 2016
